Installing WinXP in non ACPI?? Is it worth it?

I just recently discovered you can install windows in non ACPI, (standard mode instead?)

Anyways, does that mean that you manually asign IRQ settings to all pieces of hardware? or is that only part of it?

Could somebody please explain what installing WinXP in non ACPI mode would do, what are the pros and cons of doing this? thanks!!


My main interest is because I just bought a new high end sound recording soundcard, and problem is windows assigns in with an IRQ of 16 which is shared with my video card. Plus I hear any IRQ assignment over 15 is actually a "virtual" IRQ, since there are only 15 physical IRQs. Ive tried switching PCI slots and everything. Would installing in non ACPI also help me here? thanks

I found it necessary to install XP in standard mode to get my Audiophile 2496 on its own irq. The motherboard was an Asus A7v133. In standard mode I could assign irqs in the bios.
I also had an A7V266E that allowed me to assign irqs in the bios in ACPI.
So I guess it depends on the motherboard.

Yes windows xp works well without acpi.. but you are removing the ability to plug and play to a certain extent. If you do this, ensure you know what devices are where... setting up manually can be a lot of fun.

awesome sounds great if it can work well without ACPI, now my question is do I have to reinstall windows and reformat to install it? Or can I change something now without loosing any of my files and configurations?

Does assigning your own IRQs to other things such as the video card and hard drives, does this generally increase performance? if so by how much, is it noticeable?

You don't need to do a clean install to get there but you do if you want to change it back.
Here's how

device manager
computer
driver
update driver
install from a list
don't search
chose standard pc
I think when you reboot everything gets rerecognized but it's been a while so I can't remember. Perhaps someone else can clear this up.
As for irqs your vid,audio, nic and usb stuff should all be on seperate ones for best performance.

It also depends what your bios will let you set too.

Noo Noo is right. That's why I stated that it worked specifially on my A7V133. Some bios's will let you do much more.
What is your motherboard and which bios?
