Heres my problem. I just got this comp from a friend who had a spare, since mine is screwed, but when i went to install my GeForce 4 Mx 440 PCI, i installed correctly. When i reinstalled i didnt have ANY video on the Gf4, but i did on the Onboard. I disabled the onboard thinking that would fix it, it didnt, it made it worse. So now, no only do i have no video on the Gf4, i dont have any on my onboard either. I try to boot up in safe mode, and i see the drivers load, but after the last driver, it sits there. Ive also tried enabling VGA mode which usually fixes it, but it didnt. Im out of options and need some help :( Here are the specs:
Win Xp Pro
2.2 Ghz celeron
384 Mb RAM
Any other info needed just ask.
What should i do from here?

Welcome to WD butleR.
First off, take out the GeForce card and boot up and let us know if it works?
Some MB's have a jumper onboard which disables onboard video, and the good ones do it automatically.
So: tell us what your' mainboard is.

Ok so from what I am reading, sounds like the onboard never disabled.
Some more details would definately help. Such as computer type and model if it is a branded machine or if its a custom build, what mainboard it has in it. We can help you figure that out too if you are not sure.
One thing you can try, is if you can get into the bios, see if you can disable onboard video, or change you video order from AGP/PCI to PCI/AGP.
I know these answers seem vague but we really need more details to help you accurately repair your machine.

i went into the bios and switched it from onboard to PCI and now i am getting video on the GeForce, but not after the windows splash screen. It is a custom build, and all that i know about the mainboard right now is that its an intel with no AGP slot on it D:
EDIT: i took out the GeForce, turned on the computer, and again after the windows splash screen it goes blank. But i did notice this, after the splash screen, my monitor goes blank but it's still recieving something from the onboard becuase this light isnt blinking like it does when it's idle.

Driver and Bios are here:
http://www.giga-byte.com/MotherBoard/Products/Products_GA-8LS533.htm
You may have to flash the bios, but try the onboard video driver update first.
How old is this system? We may have a warranty issue.
Also, try booting with all the cards removed from inside the pc using the o/b video.

Yeah, right. Sorry, I forgot that.
So, what about the other things I mentioned above?
And: at what point exactly does the screen go blank?

Have you tried other options from the StartUp menu like "last known good" or "vga mode"?

sorry...got my details mixed up:
after mup.sys loads...the driver load screen just sits there like theyre done loading but nothing happens. When i try to start it normally, after windows splash it just goes blank...sorry about the mix-up.

Darn, but this sounds familiar to another couple of recent ones.
So, that last "glitch" is with the onboard. And what happens with the GForce is nothing at all?
Clear that up please.

I think I'd try a "repair" install now, but I have talked to a few others so lets get some other ideas.

Can you get into bios? Assuming the geforce is not installed, verify that your onboard is enabled (although if you can see it post, I don't see how it couldn't be). If you have the xp cd, you could try a repair install. I sense a corrupt file, since safe mode only loads generic drivers.

if the PC boots correctly to windows with the onboard video try removing the graphics card from system properties, reboot to the bios enable the PCI card and shutdown to install the card.
Then boot up and see if it loads to safe mode correctly.

But it doesn't Arch. That's the problem at this point.
Doc?

Sorry I got the impression the onboard worked fine it was just the new PCI card causing the problem or am I getting confus_ed??:D
BTW this is a working card isnt it?

Mmm everything now sounds 'mussed up' big style driver wise - mup.sys is like vmm32.vxd was in 98 the 'one size catch all does everthing left' driver, its bad enough for load problems normally, but since it gets changed every time you change video, I'd say we are now possibly at 'hopeless' ..
So you've tried all the usual approaches, if it were me I'd maybe have a 'dabble' from console {but you have to know 'how' - its not a procedure to be done remotely via internet instructions anyway} - so my next port of call would be a repair on in-place re-install of windows - means reapplying service packs (or at least the setup bit at windows update as the updates should be stored locally).
So yeah Trip you just anticipated my advice ;) - but I'm going to bed now, so will look again when I'm less sleepy !

The best thing would be to print out the following link, and be sure to apply as many patches as you can and install the firewall before you go online for the first time. And let us know how it goes:
