help! Geforce 5200 fx not working!

I bought this card:

for use on this computer:

Motherboard: ECS Elitegroup L7VMM2
BIOS: Pheonix/Award
CPU: AMD XP 2200
Memory: 512 MB PC2100 DDR DIMM
Power Supply: Bestec ATX-250 250W (but I upgraded to 350W
Video: S3iamon VIA KM266 Integrated
Hard Drive: Generic 100 GB
CD rom
uses XP


I can't get it to work :(
All I get is a black screen on my monitor. If I unplug the monitor I get "no signal detected" coming up on the monitor (which is a Samsung 152N..one of those skinney monitors).
I thought it was a faulty card so I sent it back. I just got the replacement and it's doing the same thing. The fan on the card spins..I've made sure there are no pins missing etc.
Also, when installing the card:
If I use the cd and not the windows hardware deal, it will install fine but when I reboot, the windows "found new hardware" bubble comes up. If I use the windows hardware wizard, it goes through and then says "data invalid". I downloaded drivers from the manf. website and get the same thing.
Shortly after I bought the machine, I upgraded the video card to a geforce 2...I didn't have any problems with it!

what do I do?

Welcome to windrivers muddin. Did you disable the onboard video in the bios? Try uninstalling all the drivers and start again.

I assume both the cd and the downloaded drivers come from xfx - have you tried the nvidia drivers? http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_56.72

Have you ruled out the monitor? Try your monitor on another computer or another monitor on your computer.

Out of curiousity, why are you installing a PCI video card instead of AGP?

I tried the nvidia drivers. The monitor works fine when using the other video card.
How do I disable the onboard video in bios? If I do disable it...and the card still doesn't work, how would I reverse it since I only get a black screen?

You should have a setting in bios to select your video card. If you are using an add-in card, you need to disable the onboard. This is the likely cause of your black screen.

In the event this doesn't solve the problem, you could reverse it by pulling the geforce card and resetting the cmos (or removing the battery).

Okay...wonderful. I don't have the black screen anymore.

I've tried using the CD and the drivers from the website...but it keeps saying data invalid

Okay...here is what fixed the 'data is invalid' problem (I found it after searching on this site...amazing huh? :D )

This is an under documented issue with several PCI cards, including the Texas Instruments IEEE 1394 controller card which was shipped with MovieDV Suite. It is due to a protection problem in the Windows registry. At the end of the install, the device driver displays "The Data is invalid". To fix this problem, go to Start, Run... and type "REGEDT32.EXE" without the quotes to run the Registry Editor. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\P CI and you will see a number of keys of the form "VEN_xxxx", where xxxx are strings like "1102&DEV_0004&SUBSYS_00011103&REV_04". Under each of these folders will be another folder with a long numerical name. Open each folder and look for the "DeviceDesc" which matches the hardware you are trying to install - in this case "IEEE 1394 controller". HIGHLIGHT THE ENTRY "VEN_xxxx" for that device and select 'SECURITY'-'PERMISSIONS' FROM THE WINDOW TOP MENU and then tick "Allow" for "Full Control". Close REGEDT32, reboot, and then do a normal install. If the install again provides an error message, recheck the permissons in regedit again. For some reason regedit does not always save the new permissions.
