I have an issue where I have a user who's getting the error message

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
\windows\system32\config\system

I found articles on how to correct this and I'm able to get into the recovery cnosole. Problem is that I can't perform any of the commands. Even MD gets access denied.

I assume it's because the system thinks the users logged in and not an administrator, though the user should have admin rights. I've tried the LOGON command but it never gives the option to enter a password.

Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated.

Try using the BartPE CD (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder).

I think for the recovery console you will have to log in as the administrator rather than just someone with administrator status.

I had exactly the same error message on a client pc a couple of weeks back and a chkdsk /r in the console sorted it out.

Hopefully you have a backup of any data?

Thanks for the replies. I got it all fixed.

I installed the HD in a 2nd computer, as a 2nd HD, so that I could follow the directions to the following microsoft article.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307545&Product=winxp

Once I replaced the 5 files I was able to return the HD back to the original PC and follow the directions without any issues. After the HD was returned the recovery consoled worked correctly.
