It may help. Also check the temp dir clean that out as well Did all that, still have a problem. Checked the update log and checked with the knowledgebase regarding the error number, tried every method on the knowlegebase article and still no joy. Previous updates were successful in the past. Argh. NooNoo July 6th, 2004, 04:39 PM tried safe mode? Tried downloading them separately and running them standalone? Qchain? amyb July 6th, 2004, 04:51 PM tried safe mode? Tried downloading them separately and running them standalone? Qchain? Yes, tried downloading separately and disabled antivirus without luck. I will try safe mode tomorrow (if it's not being used--it's a lab machine). Edit: What is Qchain? Wow! That's great, I just read about it. It's been what I've been looking for in regard to my Windows servers!! NooNoo July 6th, 2004, 04:59 PM You don't use sus? amyb July 6th, 2004, 05:17 PM You don't use sus? no. Because I've had problems similar to this before, with my friends' computers. Unregistered/pirated versions of Windows XP will not work properly with Windows Update. Perhaps you should check this out. amyb July 7th, 2004, 11:41 AM I hope you have a registered version of your Windows XP. Because I've had problems similar to this before, with my friends' computers. Yes, it is a resgistered version (this is a work environment and on a Army base!). Anyway, latest update has now been installed. I had configured updates to download automatically (before it was done manually). 3fingersalute July 9th, 2004, 11:48 AM I was having this same issue, and I figured out a workaround that is a pain in the *ss, but it allowed me to at least get the updates installed. I would be interested to know if anybody has ever resolved this issue, and how they did it. amyb July 9th, 2004, 01:40 PM I was having this same issue, and I figured out a workaround that is a pain in the *ss, but it allowed me to at least get the updates installed. I would be interested to know if anybody has ever resolved this issue, and how they did it. I thought I had posted what I did..hmm..Anyway, I noticed that updates weren't configured to download automatically, so I configured updates to do that. The next day when I came in, the downloads were downloaded, so I installed and received no errors. King Grover July 14th, 2004, 11:52 AM I'm havenign a porlbem similar to this one. King Grover July 15th, 2004, 07:48 AM no, i haven't yet. I was jsut wondering if anybody else seen that same thing. I kinda figured that it was infected with soemthing and needed one particular patch before it wood take anymore. I'll go to MS.com and get the latest XP patches again and save them to disk before i go to his crib to check the log and stuff. good suggestion, though Cry July 15th, 2004, 07:35 PM What do i do first i cant install 3 of them and they are Security Update for Windows XP (KB840315) Security Update for Windows XP (KB841873) Security Update for Windows XP (KB839645) and well how do i get them to install without failing i read all the posts but didnt make since can u tell me in a ezer step by step way? thank u Duke of Rezin July 15th, 2004, 09:13 PM I've had this problem before and with Office Update. One partial solution is to obtain as many updates as possible from the Microsoft download page rather than through Windows Update. Also, try this .vbs file (xp_winupd_netpolicy.vbs) from http://www.dougknox.com. or run gpedit.msc and try resetting permissions manually. Good luck. Chiquita July 15th, 2004, 10:13 PM I'm a long-time reader of WinDriver forums, found a lot of good help and advice here. :) I also had a terrible time trying to get the latest updates. I tried everything suggested here, did many searches around the internet and the updates still failed to install. Then I remembered ZoneAlarm.... I'd installed the free version awhile back, but I'd shut it down a week or so ago so it wasn't running in the taskbar area as usual....however, it WAS still running in the XP services/processes list. So, I activated it, went back to Win Updates, clicked the "allow" box from ZA when it popped up, and the updates FINALLY installed properly! Anyway, just thought I'd throw that in as a possibility.... NooNoo July 16th, 2004, 05:51 AM Thanks for the tip Chiquita and glad you quit lurking!
