After re-installing Windows 98 on my Thinkpad i1400 Model 420, the resolution has changed to 640 x 480 pixels.

The LCD panel is capable of 1024 x 768 pixels, but I cannot change the settings.

From the IBM website, I re-installed:

1)vftpkr8m.exe - Video driver for Windows 98/Me - ThinkPad 1400, 1500 (2621, 2651)

2) dx90update_redist.exe (DirectX 9.0b Redistributable ) required by the video driver.

Still getting only 16 simple colors!

Anyone know the solution for this?

Thanks,
Denny

Welcome to WD Denny1 .
Did you look at all the driver downloads they have there ?
Start there
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/multiplefiledownload.do?validate=true

and enter your info , there's about a dozen drivers for audio , video , moniters ,
so on .

Yes, I have spent literally half the day at that site!

3) BIOS Update I (Diskette) - ThinkPad 1400, 1500 (Machine Type 2621)

4) Monitor File for Windows 98/Me/2000/XP - ThinkPad General

Still stuck with 16 colors only :-(

Thanks for responding!

In device manager, what do you show under display adapters? Do you have any devices with yellow ! or ?

Under Monitors AND Display Adapters:
No ! or ? by IBM ThinkPad 1024x768 LCD panel

No ! or ? under any other devices.

For thoroughness, I am noting the following, but unless the LCD panel resolution is affected by them, I do not want to tackle them now. No ! or ? by

In Device Manager:

1. Under Other Devices (! and ? at PCI Multimedia Audio Device) NOTE: Driver tab states "no driver files are required or have been loaded for this device".

2. Under Sound, video and game controllers:
a. ! at MPU-401 Compatible. NOTE: Driver File Details shows "msmpu401.vxd" installed.
b. ! at Sound Blaster Pro or compatible. NOTE: Device Status shows "The MMDEVLDR.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver (Code2). The update wizard states the best driver is already installed (C:\windows\inf\wave.inf). It says to fix this, Update Driver. But I did not get a Win98 disc with the computer.

Thanks,
Denny

You are not showing a display adapter at all. You need to install the ALi AGP Driver http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4HT3RX Make sure you select the english (vftpixol.exe)

Thanks.

Going to the IBM site & will install later tonight.

Have DSL on the desktop, but will have to move it to the notebook using floppies...

ALi AGP Driver http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/s...cid=MIGR-4HT3RX was a smaller file than I assumed, so have installed it already.

Still only 16 colors though! Is there something I should be selecting manually?

Now the Update Wizard, performs a driver file search for
RAGE MOBILITY-M AGP (English)

Then it says it is ready to install it from location "C:\windows\inf\other\atitec~1.inf."

However, it then asks for a disk labeled "ATI Windows9x display driver, disk #1...provided by your computer manufacturer."

NO disk was provided by IBM...

Should I manually choose a location for the wizard to locate a file installed by the ALi AGP driver? Several now appear in "C:\drivers\w9x\display\ATIDrive." The particular file the wizard looks for ("Atfenuxx.hlx") is not listed in that directory.

When the wizard searches automatically and cannot find the manufacturer's disk, the file it is trying to copy is "Atfenuxx.hlx" on ATI Windows9x display driver disk #1.

I hope I am not including too much information.

I chose manully chose one of the .INF files, but the Wizard still asks for the "ATI Windows9x Display Driver, Disk #1" supplied by the manufacturer.

NO disk here from IBM.

Do you think I can or need to get one from their website?

Thanks,
Denny

No matter where I point the Wizard to, it insists on having the manufacturer-supplied disk #1...

...which I do not have, of course.

Can I get one from the IBM site?

Thanks,
Denny

Cancel the update wizard. Run C:\drivers\w9x\display\setup.exe

THANK YOU!!

For the benefit of those who may be following this thread.

Ran setup.exe as suggested.
Selected "reboot."

Windows found "new hardware;"
self-installed "unknown monitor" software:
ALi 1621...system.

Came back up with 16 million colors ;-)

Have a great day!

I was in an absolute panic. I had EXACTLY the same scenerio as above and worked hours attempting to correct it. Then I thought I would "Google" as a last resort. Found this website and this series of posts from a year ago. Did exactly as recommended (using setup.exe rather than the wizard) and I have my laptop back in full working order!!! THANK YOU!!! :thumbs2:
