Forgive me if you've heard this before. I have an LG drd8160B DVD-ROM which, until recently played DVDs fine. I never had occasion to play a DVD-ROM (data)until I brought one home from the UK(I am in Canada). It would not recognise it at all. I also brought a PAL DVD which played fine.Once or twice. Since then it no longer olays ANY dvds-movies or data. CD's (data, audio,VCD) all play no problem. Device manager recognizes it as a dvd-rom,when I go to properties it sez its "working properly" but of course it does not. Is it toast? Any ideas?
Running XP Pro,AMD 1000 Athlon,512 RAM blah blah blah
Thanx

Welcome to Windrivers Chukrst
there is a firmware update here for it (http://www.lge.com/products/mobile/mobil/sidemenu.do?action=read&group_code=CTG1000503&list_code=PRD_SW&seq=3814&page=1&target=prread&categoryId=CTG1000500&modelCategoryId=CTG1000503&parentId=CTG1000439) But it sounds like there is a media imcompatibility. What format is the data dvd, -r +r, -rw +rw?
I don't see a list of supported media types for this drive on the lg site.... will keep digging.

If nothing else,It does play DVD-ROM. Or it should. The UK CD was PAL so I'm surprised that even played. It was a documentary on Studio One in Jamaica. I'm surprised that played because in retrospect it shouldn't have but I overheard a guy in a Computer store sat(erroneously as it turns out) that computers can't tel the dif between PAL and NTSC. The other DVDs I played were all NTSC. I saw the firmware patch but haven't dealt with it yet cuz I am relectat o pull cables and set IDE as iI believe it reccomends you do. The UK data dvd was in a magazine and I don't know what format it was . The data DVD my pal burned was DVD-ROM

Thats what I meant in my previous post... your pal burned it and used a particular type of media -r/+r/+rw/-rw that would probably cause it not to recognise if your dvdrom can cope with say -r and your pal burned it using +r
As for the ntsc/pal thing, most computers can cope with it...the region is an issue, but there are ways around that. www.dvdrhelp.com will explain in detail about various aspects of dvdmanship

It turns out there are two optical readers inside the drive. Since it plays no DVDs(no pal,no ntsc) and no DVD media I have to deduce the player is history DVD wise. Thanx though
