Once you installed the video card the onboard video will disable automatic if the video card is compatible with the MB i flash the bios got the newes bios update for my motherboard GrandDad July 15th, 2004, 05:26 PM this what my motherboard said it is not necessary to disable the onboard video on the MB. Once you installed the video card the onboard video will disable automatic if the video card is compatible with the MB i flash the bios got the newes bios update for my motherboard The 810L I had you still had to disable on-board to get it to work . ligtu2 July 15th, 2004, 06:33 PM The 810L I had you still had to disable on-board to get it to work . how do i disable on-board video card GrandDad July 15th, 2004, 07:03 PM how do i disable on-board video card When you first start up the PC it should say somewhere 'To enter Set-up hit Delete' or other key , you may have to restart a few times and keep hiting that key until you get into BIOS . Then look for this Tab or page ; PCI / Plug and Play Setup Page This page sets some of the parameters for devices installed on the system PCI bus, and devices that use the system plug and play capability. Plug and Play Aware O/S Enable this item if you are using an O/S that supports Plug and Play such as Windows 95 or 98. ------------------------------------------------------------- Primary Graphics Adapter Use this item to define if your primary graphics adapter is installed in a PCI slot or on an AGP bus. ------------------------------------------------------------- PCI VGA Palette Snoop When this item is enabled, multiple VGA devices operating on different buses can handle data from the CPU on each set of palette registers on every video device. -------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't know if you'll have more than 2 choices , if only 2 = then the one thats highlighted or selected ,then click the other . if 3 , try 1 of the other 2=(PCI if available) and then at bottom of page (or somewhere) select like F-10 or ESC to exit and save , and select Yes when asked . ligtu2 July 15th, 2004, 08:15 PM When you first start up the PC it should say somewhere 'To enter Set-up hit Delete' or other key , you may have to restart a few times and keep hiting that key until you get into BIOS . Zerotech July 16th, 2004, 12:40 PM The PC Chips 599LMR is a socket-7 Pentium class board. The PCI slots are most likely rev 2.0; a 64MB video card requires a rev 2.1 slot which were in relatively few socket-7 boards. I doubt that motherboard could handle any more than 32MB of RAM on a video card (all those little chips pull power!). I've had similar problems putting together various refurb's from other people's old cast-offs. Edit: ligtu2 appears to be saying that neither the PCI video nor the onboard work when the PCI card is plugged in, but the onboard video works when the PCI card is removed. Which is why I made the statement above. ligtu2 July 16th, 2004, 01:09 PM The PC Chips 599LMR is a socket-7 Pentium class board. Or is it 256MB of shared RAM ? A third possibility being that the motherboard itself supports 256MB of system RAM maximum. There were no 256MB video cards being made when that motherboard was new, so I find it doubtful that the spec would be supported. I stand by my initial assessment of 32MB video RAM maximum on a PCI card in that motherboard. NooNoo July 17th, 2004, 05:24 AM Zerotech, I agree. This is way too old to support 2.1 ligtu2 July 17th, 2004, 01:14 PM The motherboard will support a 256MB video card ? Or is it 256MB of shared RAM ? This is way too old to support 2.1 how do i no if my motherboard pci bus is 2.0 or 2.1 TripleRLtd July 17th, 2004, 02:27 PM NooNoo and Zerotech probably already answered this for you, but check your mainboard manual. Also, in Bios setup, there is sometimes the ability to enable PCI 2.1 support in the Advanced Settings or one of the other pages. So, check both of those. ligtu2 July 17th, 2004, 03:20 PM NooNoo and Zerotech probably already answered this for you, but check your mainboard manual. Have you tried a different slot as Noo suggested? ligtu2 July 17th, 2004, 05:38 PM So then you should be good to go. Is the video card definitely good? Have you tried a different slot as Noo suggested? yes NooNoo July 17th, 2004, 06:16 PM options 1. The card is faulty or incompatible 2. The pci slot is faulty. 3. The bios is not set to boot from pci. 4. The monitor cable is connected to the wrong port. 5. Onboard video does/does not require to be disabled in bios. ligtu2 July 17th, 2004, 07:06 PM options 1. If it refuses to boot with onboard disabled, will it with onboard enabled? If not, it leaves option 1 - incompatible. Zerotech July 18th, 2004, 10:50 PM If not, it leaves option 1 - incompatible. Which is what I have been saying all along. You can only take old hardware so far before you hit the point of diminishing (or non-existant) returns. Believe me, I know, I've tried. You'll be lucky to get a 32MB PCI video card to work in that motherboard, I'll bet 16MB would be a lot more comfortable to it. I had a lot of long, frustrating fights trying to upgrade motherboards like that one (the Matsonic 5025S/PC Chips M571, for example). Socket 7's with the i430VX chipset or, worse yet, SiS, Via and ALi's "near equivalent" versions of that chipset. If you want to upgrade motherboards like that, you have to look at what was top-of-the-line parts when that motherboard was new. That will show you the most probable limits of the hardware you're working with and save you numerous headaches. I apologise if I seem harsh or short with you, but I'm pitying the poor horse that's had more than its fair share of beating. /rant off ligtu2 July 18th, 2004, 11:07 PM option 5 - the motherboard does not like working with the onboard enabled and a pci card, or the motherboard will only work with a pci card if the onboard is enabled.
