I am having trouble with my IBM R40 System. every time i run my s-video out to my tv in, i get horrible screen garbage on my tv. when i switch the viewing setting to black/white, it is a crystal clear display, and all is fine. my second dilemma is watching dvd's on my tv. eventhough i have the screen garbage, i popped in a dvd, and found out i have some kind of "restriction" as IBM referrs to it as, and am unable to watch dvd's on my tv. any help would be great. thanks!

Are you hooking the laptop directly to the TV or going through a pass-through, like an RF Modulator or your DVD/VCR? Those can wreak havoc with svideo output to TV. As for the DVD playback restriction...weird. Never heard of that happening. Do the DVDs play properly on your laptop? There's also a BIOS setting for PAL/NTSC that might be causing the problem?

Welcome to Windrivers j3pacyns

Some dvd's are copy protected and will only play on a dvd player. If it detects a tv out it will not work. more on that here (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1231647,00.asp)

Is the tv in on the tv a svideo socket or rca or what?
Svideo to svideo is the best way to go - any conversion is likely to cause problems.

I'm going right from my computer to the tv..no modulator, but what's this bios setting you speak of?

Bios - Basic Input Output System

It is what tells the system it has a system to run. Often accessed by pressing the del key or an Fx key when the computer first starts.

I am having trouble with my KDS monitor. It cut out on me while I was sleeping so I do not know the cause of the problem. It does not want to start and the fuse is not blown. The light turns green and then red to fade. Any suggestions?

Rickkkk I would suggest making a new thread for your problem but my guess would be that the problem is your video card not the monitor. Try swapping out video cards if you got a spare and see if it works. Or try reseating the video card in your computer. If you have a second computer then plug the monitor into it and see if it works.

Well since you are on a laptop I doubt you have the setting he is talking about. Your computer probably uses software decoding and not a hardware decoder which would have the bios and is what he is talking about.

Your software decoder is probably hardcoded to be Region 1 which is the US.

As for your display problems try switching your desktop resolution. I know on my bosses computer when we plugged his laptop into a external screen the tv wouldn't show certain resolutions correctly. I think he normally ran at 1024x768 but we had to drop him to 800x600 to get it to work right on the tv.

Thank you. I tested it on my back up computer and it would not start up. It appears that it gets so far and then halts. Because the degausing sequence stops before completion. For the measly $175 I paid it may not be worth fixing. Considering that it was built in the summer of 2000. Next year, a new flat 17" or larger. I am going to spend more, my first 19" is still functioning fine after 6 years. I paid $600 for that one, compared with the Korean standard of quality.
