What does the Plus/ Minus mean in DVD+-RW

I came across the Plus/Minus sign in shopping for a DVD+- RW. So what does it mean? (Plus on top of the minus):confused:

Thanks Mib,

DVD-RW & DVD+RW are different formats of DVD disks. Evidently both formats can use each others disks, but you can't record in DVD+RW using DVD-RW, but the recorder I am buying uses both formats so I don't have to worry,
