I have recently upgraded my PC's motherboard and processor. I also reinstalled Windows ME (& the modems drivers) to avoid any problems with the new boards.

Unfortunatly since then the modem causes my system to hang after autonegotiation. It dials out fine you can hear all the squeals but at the end of them (and it takes a while for them to complete) the system freezes.

Has anyone come across this problem before and have any trouble shooting hints/tips

Awhile back I had found a spiffy article in PC Magazine telling what should be done to change a motherboard after Windows is installed. If you changed to the new motherboard and CPU without reinstalling Windows, consider following the advise given at http://www.zdnet.com/pcmag/stories/solutions/0,8224,2630314,00.html. It says to go into your Registry and delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum and everything under it. Then install the new motherboard and power up. Plug and Play will go out and look for all the hardware and will leave your system properly configured for the new motherboard.

If Windows was not reloaded, boot up in safe mode and check your Device Manager to see if there are any duplicate devices. They do not show up in Normal mode.

might be a stupid question but did you load the newest drivers for this modem???? if it worked before ..and stopped after ME was loaded try drivers if that doesn't work go back to 98se until ME 2nd edition comes out..
never buy a microsoft first edition unless you have time to be there guinea pigs and test there stuff for them there is a reason for win95 having a,b,c, win98 1st and second edition BUGS/conflicts
i run ME and have no problems...i stick with top name companies...that update there products good luck

Usr modems prefer irqs of 9 and below and not shared with anything at all.

If it is sharing an irq it will hang just as it has apparently verified your username and password.

Try deleting one com port in bios and setting the modem irq to that com port - especially if you a network card in there.

Thank you all for your advice.

In the end I disabled both my Com ports to give myself an extra free IRQ. This seems to have fixed the problem in the short Term.

I think it may be time to get rid of my ISA scsII card & soundcard to free up some more IRQs and get my com ports back.
