My new pc came with a hamr modem. I am not satisfied with the hamr so I purchased a new us robotics performance pro 56 k modem and when installed the pc will not shut down. Prior to installation of the new usr modem I removed drivers for the hamr modem and I also went into bios setup and disabled "on board modem".
I have also noticed that in system tools that it specifies a problem device:
acpi irq holder for pci steering, acpi/*pnp0c0f/\00000003.
I have spent many hours trying to get the usr modem working but have now had to re-installed the hamr modem.
Any ideas?

I think your problem here is that you need to install the IRQ mini rout patch. Find what chipset you mobo is and download all the latest chipset drivers. If it's VIA, go to www.via.com.tw (http://www.via.com.tw) and download there 4-in-1 driver. I had the same problem once and had to use this update. I went to Windows ME after that and never needed the update anymore (I love ME compared to 98SE)

If the modem is working, but the system will not shut down, try the following: from start menu click run, type in msconfig, choose selective startup, click the tab labeled config.sys, and look for any programs related to the modem. If any are there, try removing the check beside them, and resetting the computer. Do this with all the other tabs, remembering to re-check each program as you try it until you find one that allows the computer to shut down properly. When you find the one causing te problem, go through sysedit and try rem'ing it from the system configuration. Make sure you don't delete it as it may no fix the problem.

Thanks for the reply. FYI I returned the internal modem and bought a usb external and it appears to work fine. I was unable to correct the problem and must have changed something in my computer that now will not allow me to restore system with the recover cd that came with my new pc. I am unable to return to winme (that was included in package price)because it is only a restore disk and when trying to use it to install winme I get the msg "error #96, The image you are attempting to restore is not valid on this machine". I now have to use my old win98 and it looks like I have no way to push Future shop to fix it unless I pay $75/hr. All this trouble and it's only been a month since i bought it.
