How to secure IE6

I have Win98SE and IE6 all with latest patches, as @ 08/06/2004 on my computer, I am wondering if any can tell me how to secure IE6 to stop pop ups and all malicious scripting, Active X control and programs downloading without my consent etc. I have seen some free pop up programs on the net but I wonder if by installing them I don't creative another problem while to trying solve this problem.(i.e. they may contain adaware. spyware or other nasties. I have been told to set my security to HIGH in IE6 but also been told this affects your browsing as pages won't load properly. A friend of mine has Opera 7.0 as his browser and he felt secure until I asked him how did he know he had all the latest updates. He could not answer.

If you turn up the security then some webpages won't load... the question is a compromise - how much do you want to view the webpage against what the security risk is.

Spybot 1.3 has a nifty little utility called teatimer which can actively tell you what nasty's are on a site you visit.

Without knowing what the sites that you want to visit are, it is impossible to advise you really.

If you want to visit a site that insists on activex being on, then you have two choices, lower your security or not go there.

Not to sound like an ******* or anything, but the only way to secure IE is to not use IE. Use FireFox, Mozilla, Opera, anything but IE to surf the web...and then when you need to use WindowsUpdate you can use IE. But that's all! Same goes for Outlook Express...both unsecure as they come. Just so you know, I've tried my best to make IE secure...but by then it was so slow and error prone it wasn't even useful! It's a mess...good luck!

With Spybot, make sure you use the immunize function. In addition, if you switch the view to advanced, go to the Hosts section and the Spybot hosts lists. This will prevent your computer from accessing known bad sites.

You also need to have a firewall. Zonealarm is an excellent free one, although if you go for one of the pay versions it adds popup blocking, cookie control, and additional progam controls. http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp

The free google toolbar will also block popups.
