I've finally decided to take the plunge and buy a paintball gun, but I'm really inexperienced and don't really know what to look for. I want a good entry level gun under $150, preferably under $100. The Spyder Victor II is my current choice. Anybody got advice for a paintball noob?

I used to play every weekend, before I had kids and now I don't have money to go.
That is a good starter gun. Spyder is what I started with, not too expensive, well made and you can make your own repairs pretty easily. I bought mine in 1996, and it still works on cats that come into my back yard :thumbs2:

I'm sure Zil meant that he scared them with it, not actually hit them as I think that would be fatal to the cat! I know a well placed paintball on a pice of fencing would scare a cat enough to keep it out of the garden for good, (with no pain). I'll tell you what I did to a cat that used to come into my kitchen and spray everywhere when I'm in the mood for a flame. :p
As a victim of paintball, I would suggest the gun that can fire more rounds per minute than any other is the best, easy!

Who said I torture them? Have you ever seen a paintball gun? Do you know that they travel at around 300 fps (enough to bruise a person, but certainly not kill)? Or that the aim and accuracy (of my particular gun without a barrel/bolt upgrade) is lousy at best? I have actually never hit a cat in my backyard, I only use it as a deterant (sp?), and it works pretty well unloaded too (loud sound). Now if I was really mean, I'd get my air rifle or my CO2 pistol and kill the stupid thing. So back off.

Yes, I have seen a paintball gun, I own 2. While they just bruise a human, they do much more damage to small animals. Even if you are just doing it to scare them, you are being cruel and reckless, what happens when you "accidentally" hit one, if it doesnt kill the poor thing its going to do some serious damage

Yeah, I liked that, "It's only enough to bruise an average 160 pound human"
Well what about an 8-12 pound cat?
So do tell us the evil that this cat does in your back yard? Kill rodents? Shut the birds up? Get attacked as it is Mockingbird season(evil ****ing birds)? Pisses on something? Just hangs out? Mocks you for living? Satanic rituals? A member of Al Queda terrorist rings? Sleeps? Looking for a place to sleep? Just waking up from Sleeping?

I am only cool with shooting it if you are going to eat it. Or to protect something, cause a Possum or Raccon will kill your cats. And I ain't gonna kill someones pet.

And what if I do hit it? Fluffy and friends certainly won't be coming back into my yard, harrassing my cat or spraying my outdoor furniture.

So anyway, back to paintball....
Been a loooong time since I played and my old razorback was about as accurate as spitting at people. Get a gun with a rifled barrel. I found the longer barrels to be more accurate. Autocockers are better but burn ammo faster though more accuratly when they are burning ammo. Get a big hopper for paintballs with a quickload feature larger tubes that hold a good deal of balls to carry with you.
The only experience with a rifled autococking gun was one of our guys had a brass eagle gun and the thing tore me up. He was using Zap brand balls (SUCK - I liked california magnums myself) and they refused to break and we had a must be spattered with paint to be out rule. So, this guy shot further, farther and was deadly accurate compared to us. It sucked and I got hit 11 times before we surrendered.

I'm preeeety sure this was the marker/gun that hosed my @$$, leg, shoulder, @$$ again...
He bought the aftermarket barrel for it too. Thing kicked our butts. I'm not making any reccomendations as to brand though, just wanted to point that out.
Question for present day players -What sort of air do you use now? We used to used the regular CO2 cartridges but I don't see any of the new guns sold with the units for them. Just the larger cylenders now. How do you get them refilled and where?

My gun is going to have a 14oz co2 tank. Checked with the local paintballing place and they do refills for $3 or so.

Review on gun pointed out something that I had forgotten that's important. The gun needs to be cleaned and taken apart easily. A nice light gun oil is good too to keep the marketr in good shape. They get dirty so fast it's just crazy.

I got my gun. Unbelievably accurate even with the stock barrel, I can write my name at 20 meters.
