I've had this LG drive for a year and a half. I've been pretty happy with it till now.

I recently bought some TDK 12X Hi-Speed cdrw media. I've been having all sorts of problems using them.

When I first write to a blank disc, it usually works fine. The problem I have is when I do something else with it after data is already on the disc.

when I try to erase the disc, I get errors most of the time.

when I use Direct CD for packet writing, sometimes the drive will just hang. I see the light on front of the drive blinking but it just goes on and on. I usually have to reboot.

I'm thinking there is a compatiblity problem with this drive and hi-speed media. Perhaps there is a ROM driver update available for it but I can't find it. On the drive it says, "ROM VER: 1.10" built in November 2002.

I have used TDK 4X cdrw media with it and it works fine. I've used Easy CD Creator 5 and Nero and both have similar problems.

Any clues as to how I can solve my problem? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Windrivers monkeedoo

You have come to the right conclusion, it does not like that particular media.... best to just try another brand

firmware updates here (http://us.lgservice.com/gcsc/b2c/hpi/main) Read the page thoroughly, updating firmware is done at your own risk.

thanks for the advice NooNoo. and also thanks for the welcome too. I rarely use forums so if I do something wrong, please let me know.

just wondering how you know that drive doesn't like that media. do you have the same drive? the same experience?

If the media is a relativly new type the firmware on the drive may not be able to fully support them hence the need somtimes to have to update it.Just ensure it is for the model number of your drive and not any other.
Using nero you can see which firmware is installed at present on your drive.

Thanks for the Nero tip, Archer. At least I was able to double-check that the firmware version Nero found was the same as what was labelled on the drive. Haven't found a firmware update yet. Will keep looking. :)

The firmware page here (http://forum.firmware-flash.com/dl_firmware.php?category=1&manufactor=16) is usually a good place to look as they also produce unofficial versions too [at your own risk].
