(I am assuming that I won't supply all the info you'll need, but I'll try and be as proactive as possible...)
My computer is a Dell P4, with a SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio sound card. I just recently purchased a game that requires the use of "DirectSound" capability. Evidently, I don't have this, seeing as when I have the sound on, the game doesn't work, but when I run a dos command to turn off the sound in the game, it works.
I was wondering if anyone knew where I could acquire the updated drivers for a SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio sound card, as it relates to a Dell Computer.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

It would help if you could give the exact model of your Dell computer.
However, you can try this site yourself, and just follow the instructions:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
You will also find here the latest download for DirectX, which is what you require to activate DirectSound.

The system itself is a Dell Dimension 8200 Intel Pentium 4 2.78 Gh
The op system is XP.
Also, I looked at the Dell site, and it doesn't have anything for my sound card on there (figures).
I think that about covers it. If you need any more info, let me know.

So welcome to the forums shazam187.
With Dell its either easy ... or hard ;)
If you know your 'dell service tag' its simple - punch that into the link given above.
.. Dell Service Tag and Express Service Code. A System Service Tag is a five to seven-digit alpha-numeric code located on a sticker on the bottom of your portable system or back panel of your desktop, workstation, or server. ... example: Service Tag: VY13B. Express Service Code: 536-558-15. Again, you will find this tag on the back or bottom of your Dell ...
If not you can search fruitlessly for ages .. (the uk site though seems easier to navigate) - I think this ? (http://support.euro.dell.com/uk/en/filelib/download/index.asp?fileid=R45973&sid=DIM_PNT_P4_8200&st=) might do it.
Windows should know though about Soundmax, its on the xp hcl, so there should be drivers at windows update.
Just what are you up to ?
Direct sound is a component of directx, you can test this by running dxdiag.exe at run or by pressing start, all programs, accessories, system tools, system information, then the directx diag tool is available under the tools option. What version of directx do you have now ? directx 9.0c (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx) is the latest, sometimes games install earlier versions causing issues - it should say on the box

Actually it's there, but it doesn't say Soundmax in the option. It's the Analog Devices AD1885 Integrated Audio. Here's the link:

With regards to DirectX, refer to confus-ed's Microsoft link.
