standard win98 boot disk did not work

I recently formated my hard drive and when I was trying to reinstall win98 my cd-rom took a dump. I had an old cd-rom (a 4x mat****a) which I have installed and is being recognized. I have downloaded the correct drivers and can install them. But when I use my 98startup disk to install win98 the mat****a drivers are removed. In my mind I should be able to copy my original boot disk, remove the toshiba drivers and replace them with the Mat****a drivers. Is this possible? I have looked at the files but cannot figure out what files to replace and which ones to use in replacement. And if there is not enough room on the floppy, what files I can do without. Is this or another simple solution out their? Thinking about this in my mind seems simple but my brain seems to be making a mountain out of a mole hill. I have gone on line a found some suggestions. Some refere to editing the config file. Could use your help.

If you use a standard win98 boot disk, it should load the mscdex generic cdrom driver, not the toshiba drivers or anything else..you don't need drive specific cd drivers as long as the drive is recognized in the bios

I tried booting with a standard win98 boot disk and I still get an abort
message, drivers not found. Then I get a "device driver not found"
'OEMCD001' "no valid CDROM device drivers selected."

Is the cd drive detected by the bios?
Does the cd drive connect to the motherboard or is it connected to a sound card?

Yes the cd drive is detected by the bios and it is connected to the motherboard.
