I've been trying to solve this problem for so long, it's not even funny.

I have no sound, and when I go to the Sound and Audio Devices control panel, it says I have No Audio Devices. I have a Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS soundcard, installed, and it seems to be working properly.

I run windows XP, and I have a ASUS P4S8X-X motherboard.

Please help, and lemme know if you need anymore info.

Welcome to windrivers pizzaboy.
- Your motherboard has AC'97 Soundmax audio onboard. Did you disable the onboard audio in bios before installing the Audigy card?
- What are you showing in device manager? Any yellow ! or ? Does the Audigy appear under sound controllers?
- Have you installed the latest driver (7/29/04) for the Audigy http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/download2.asp?Product_ID=4915&dlcentric=8060&Product_Name=Sound+Blaster+Audigy+2+ZS&OSName=Windows+XP? Note - you need SP1 (or SP2) installed first.

- I have disabled it before this. No luck.
- No errors in the Device Manager.
- I downloaded and install that driver, but still no luck.

How would I go about doing that?

Can you see the Audigy in Device Manager? I've found that with Creative's drivers, after what seems to be a successful install using the installation cd, you then have to go into Device Manager and install manually, choosing to install the drivers from a specific location (in this case from the install cd). I've had to do this at different times with several Soundblaster Live! cards and my Audigy card and I have a Modem Blaster that only wants to install using the Add Hardware wizard. I never can avoid the temptation to tweak Windows til it breaks and requires a fresh install so I have reinstalled the same cards multiple times. Sometimes they install normally and sometimes they have to be installed manually.

Yes I do see it, and I will try that. I'll report back on how it went :)

Which PCI slot is the Audigy in? You say you can see it in Device Manager under Sound/Video controllers, but yet no available audio devices can be seen in the control panel. Is it a new card? When did it stop working? Are you running SP2?

Brand new, about a month old. I've been trying to fix this since then. I've changed PCI slots, and they all do the same thing. Im running SP1.

I use the cat 5 slot on my motherboard, becuase I have cable. I should uninstall that? That would be the only 'modem' on my pc.

Your pc thinks it has a modem, or at least the wav driver for one. Confirm that you don't have any modems showing up in device manager, then look under sound devices for the modem driver and delete it.

Also try this:
From a command prompt type: set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
Then start device manager and select view hidden devices. Delete any phantom hardware that you no longer have installed.

Tried it, and it didn't work. The only modem it's seeing is the one on my motherboard.

Any other ideas?

So you DO have a modem. Follow clauded's advice. Disable the modem and then try to install the sound card.

I tried that, but it still won't work. I pretty sure im doing it right, but when I restart, the modem comes back. So then I went into the BIOs and disabled it, restarted, and it shoed another modem. I uninstalled that, rebooted, and it came back up there. The thing is, I don't have another modem installed.

In device manager, don't uninstall the device - select disable instead.

Hi Pizzaboy,

This might sound like a overly simple solution, but here it goes. I also have a SB Audigy 2. When I first installed it, it wouldn't work. I then used the Creative Labs software to restore defaults, and voila, it worked. Sometimes it helps to have a different perspective.

Where is the option to do this located at?

Edit: Nevermind, I found it. Still no luck.

Have you tried to disable the digital mode,

Sound blaster Live! Will install in digital mode, under sound or volume advanced controls, Just un-check the box “1 Digital output Only” , should do the trick.

hmm..

Do you have access to another PC? Is it possible to put the card into another PC to determine if it is ok?

Can you actually see the card listed in your device manager without errors? It should say something like Audigy 2 ZS under Sound, video, game controllers. (Im not at my main pc so I could be wrong.. hehe) I will update when i get home.

I have the exact same card as you and an ASUS motherboard..and to my knowledge, you do not have a modem on that board unless you have one setup in a PCI slot. Maybe your thinking about your Network Card? (Im a bit confused with this one...)

What other devices do you have plugged into PCI slots? I would try removing all of them except the Sound Card and then see where your at there.

Next, you may have to FORCE the correct drivers accross. Simply deleting this 'modem' may not do anything. I have seen some rare cases where the OS simply misidentified the hardware and installed it as an improper device. If your OS is seeing your Soundcard as a 'modem', then you may have a registry issue. Try foring the SoundBlaster Drivers accross to that device.

I dont know if you can do this, but is it possible to post a pic of your device manager so we can see whats listed?!? Another set of eyes on the problem may just be what you need.

Let us know what you find out.. Hope this helps some.

Windows thinks it's installed ok

So look in control panel, for sound and audio - check in the properties for audio - what is the default playback and record devices?

Ok so we know that windows is seeing the card and it thinks its working properly. Yet you have no audio devices listed under sound and audio devices inthe control panel...

I think at this point I would make sure that you have the latest drivers for your card. Go into the Properties of your Audigy2 ZS and click on the driver tab, then click on update driver.

Use Windows Update to find new drivers..

OR

You can get them from Creative Labs Website.

http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/

NEXT,

Do you have the latest version of Direct X?
Do you have all Windows Updates installed on your system?

Personally I would make sure I had the latest drivers and Windows Update and see where I ended up from there... Hope this helps.

Note:
Make sure you have the THX settings set up correctly. You can tell the software what ports on the back of the card you are using for your speaker connections.

Those are some screens of my sound properties.

I've got the latest drivers and the latest version of Direct X installed. I also have done Windows Update, still no luck.

When I try to load some of the Creative programs, I get that error message. That was trying to load the Creative Mixer.

Thats what I get when I click Channel on the THX Setup Console

Ok,

ive read where you tried to uninstall this 'modem' and moved the sound card to a different location. But have you tried to uninstall the soundcard itself?
If so did you try it and then reload it with the new drivers?

Im gonna keep digging a bit to see if I can find something else..

I've uninstalled and reinstalled, did it again with the new drivers, and still nothing. Thanks so much for this, and i'll be happy to send you some money through paypal if you fix it :)

No need for the paypal thing...

Well, the next 2 things I would try..

Flash your Bios to the latest version heres the link...

http://usa.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?m=P4S8X-X&langs=09

I would also consider upgrading to Service Pack 2.

Since both of these are big steps, and could screw your PC up if not performed correctly, you may consider taking it to a professional and having them atleast perfrom the BIOS flash if you do not feel comfortable doing it yourself. They could also help you with your Sound Card issue. OR..

If you try it yourself, make sure you get the correct BIOS and the utility ( Aflash V2.21 Utility to update the motherboard flash BIOS - (DOS) ) to flash it with. Theres a readme.txt with instructions on how to flash your BIOS.

Something else you may want to try if you already havent, when you uninstalled the sound card, did you uninstall all the software and drivers that came with it? Maybe you should completely remove everything including the hardware, reboot the PC.

Have you ever edited the Registry? Always make a backup FIRST!!!

Another step you might want to consider is to search the registry for any entry that refers to Modem #1 or Audigy 2 ZS after you have removed the hardware and software.
