warbling sound on speakers

Hello;
I'm not used to using these forums, so my apologies if I mess things up.

Just making an enquiry, after days of searching and tweaking. I installed a 16x DVD ROM on my 700mh AMD Win XP computer, and things are working great. Bought a "Haunted Mansion" DVD, and the video is fantastic. But everyone sounds like they are talking underwater! I can reverse the DVD briefly, and that helps for a few seconds, but then the warbling builds up again.

I expect it's a simple solution, like buy better speakers, but I'm gun-shy after throwing so much money at computers in the past, just to dig a deeper hole.

Welcome to windrivers Terry.
-Does the problem occur only with DVD's or other audio as well? Try an audio CD and an mp3. Try a different DVD as well.
-If you have headphones available, you can plug them in to rule out the speakers as the problem. I would try them on both sound card jack and on the dvd drive jack (assuming it has one). If the warbling still occurs on the drive's audio jack, then the problem is the drive (unless its the dvd).
-What motherboard and sound card are you using?

Yes, other DVD's have the same problem. And no, audio CDs don't have this warbling problem. Can't seem to get sound off the DVD ROM audio jack.
motherboard- Hsing Tech Enterprise Co
No soundcard- just sis 7018 on the motherboard
cpu- AMD Duron MMX 697 Mh

SiSoft Sandy tells me I have to upgrade the BIOS, but last time I tried to flash the BIOS, I destroyed the computer...

Tried upgrading the audio driver, but the driver info date still says 1997

So, maybe if I buy a soundcard.....?

Followed a bit of guidance from PC Pitstop, unloaded a few back-ground programs, and tried again. There was some improvement in the sound!

That PC-cillin seems to run about 6 programs by itself. Is this all necessary?
How do you tell what programs you "need" to run?

Try this driver: http://download.sis.com/download_step1.php?act=Search&mode=2&category=3&subcategory=101&os=4&x=10&y=17. Do you know which model motherboard you have? Also, do you have SP1 (or SP2) installed?

As far as your startup programs, run the System Information plug in (under Accessories/System Tools) and post the information from Software Environment/Startup Programs, or post the hijack this log

Wow! I impress me sometimes. Wading through this computer stuff makes WalMart look like a concession stand.

Motherboard model? Maybe M810LR ? I've been all over this motherboard a half dozen times - twice with a magnifying glass, and there's nothing there. Front or back. Tried www.pcchips.com.tw for what information I could get

I installed SP2 a few days ago. Dosn't seem to be having any problems there.... Knock on wood..... Hey! There's no wood around here!

I don't see anything untoward in the startup list (although I'm not sure what all the desktop listings are).

If you can nail down a model on your motherboard I would suggest looking for a bios update, HOWEVER, there are a LOT of versions of the M810. FYI, the US site is a bit easier to work with: http://www.pcchipsusa.com/index.asp.
