Soundmax no sound

Just got a new PC but have the following problem: I have Soundmax Cadenza and am receiving no sound through my speakers except a very fuzzy windows startup. CD's, PC sounds etc all do not work. I have tried installing a new driver and receive a "Driver not found" message after setup. I checked device manager, proper cable setup, etc.. but to no avail. Driver currently installed is 5.12.1.3630

Specs are:

XP Pro
IBM Intel celeron 2.4 Ghz
Intel La Crosse D865GLC motherboard
512 Ram

Also at times after I boot a SoundMax pop up box asks me what I have installed in the front headphone jack even when there is nothing in this nonexistent jack.

If this is a new computer, it is under warranty. Have you phoned your computer support number? What IBM model is it?

Don't mess with a new computer too much, it may invalidate the warranty.

Unfortunatley there is no warranty as I got this off a friend who knows a friend. It is an IBM Netvista that has no label on it.

Funny thing, I uninstalled SoundMax and now device manager tells me I have Realtek AC'97 as my device. This is producing fuzzy, barely audible sound.

Go to the IBM support site here: http://www-1.ibm.com/support/us/all_download_drivers.html and select the option to automatically detect drivers.

I tried that option and get the message "There was an error getting your machine type information". Not sure what that means..

Based on what you said about how you acquired this pc and the above error message, I think you can work out why IBM can't get the machine type info.

What bios do you get when you boot, Intel or IBM? I just noticed that you referred to an Intel mb in your first post. IBM generally makes its own mb's and does not buy from Intel or other manufacturers. Has the board in this computer been replaced? Hi Hudsonsmith,

You are right it is Intel. Followed the link you provided and installed driver but still getting fuzzy noise at startup and that pop-up box asking what is plugged into the headphone jack.

Audio is enabled in BIOS, soundcard is showing ok in device manager.

I think I should just disable soundmax and get a new sound card. I am running out of ideas.

Although you don't have a front headphone jack, the motherboard has a header to connect one. Your board schematic is here: http://developer.intel.com/design/motherbd/lc/lc_con.htm Take a look and see that nothing is connected to or shorting out the front panel audio connection.

Also look here: http://developer.intel.com/design/motherbd/lc/lc_confg.htm. There is a jumper controlling the front panel audio connection. Confirm that you have the appropriate jumper installed to route the audio to the back panel.

Jumpers are missing! Sound is being routed to front. This may be a stupid question but where can I get these little plastic pieces to make the jumper settings correct? Not sure if this will solve the problem but it 's starting to look like it.

any mom and pop computer store should have them - but not for general sale.

Radio shack have a strip you cut down or if you have a steady hand and some 1amp fusewire, you can make your own. You just need to connect the two pins where the jumper would go together.

Hey guys, I am so glad I found this thread. I had the *EXACT* same problem. I too have a Intel D865GLC motherboard, XP Pro, 1Gb RAM and Intel 2.4GHz. My case (Antec Overture) has front panel audio connections so I placed its connector onto the motherboard pins in the manual, but to no avail. I put the jumpers over 5-6 and 9-10 and yay it worked. One inconvienience though, I now cant use the headphones jack on the front of the case, should I follow this up with intel or antec, where do you think the problem would lie??
