bad ip.

i got to school and my internet worked for the first 4 days or so, and i was sitting there and it just stopped working. so i was guessing...virus (even though i wouldnt know how a virus that shuts off your internet could spread via the internet) so i got norton anti 2005. no luck. so i checked up on my settings, asked the it at the school what they think is up. basically they dont know. my computer just isnt picking up an ip, its taking one of those windows generic 169 ones. so if i dont have a virus, and my settings are fine, then it must be the hardware. got a new pci ethernet card today. still nothing. i tried my roomates laptop into the wall (he is on wireless) and his internet worked. so its not the jack (yes i disabled his wireless and enabled the ethernet). so basically it just has one of those 169 ips and sends dhcp info but doesnt pick up. so its sends and doesnt recieve.

new virus? corrupt something? some other hardware messed up?

i think i just need to reformat. havent done it, and ive had'r for a few years. somethings corrupt, and i dont feel like searching.

Try this to once and for all see if it is hardware. Hook your roommates computer up to the network and see what info it gets assigned. IP, dns, gateway. Unhook it from the computer and manually assign that info to your computer.

Give us some more info about your computer, specifically the operating system? WinXP? Old network Card, new network card?

If winXP you should have a Local Area Connection 2 since you installed a new NIC. If not then go into device manager and remove your nic if it is listed. If it is not then check to see if you have anything "yellow tagged" called PCI communication device or network device I believe. Reinstall the drivers if so.

i havent tried manually to set the gateway and ip with the new card yet, but since the card doesnt seem to be the problem im guessing it wont work. xp home. i believe both cards are your average ethernet 10/100 pci card (i think the new one is called a version 2 or somethign)

the wierd thing is that it was working for 4 days and then i was sitting there playing my guitar and it stopped working.

installing the drivers is automatic for these cards.(the instructions had driver installation procedures for all other os's but xp, xp the direction just said plug in and drivers should automatically install as they did) the computer knew the difference between them. the correct drivers are installed.

maybe at first i should say when i first got the ip problem, i unplugged my jack from the wall and plugged it back into the wall to reset the ips and stuff. it fixed fairly quickly and i went to a site, but 2 seconds later i had no connection and when i renewed the ip i just got a 169....

well, i ran the winsock fix and rebooted. i went to a site and had an ip from the shool..10.10 or something or other...i said "WOO HOO" and then again, 2 seconds later, the connection was lost and when i renewed the ip i got a 169.

maybe there's some program i'm loading or some virus thats changing the registry stuff that the fix is fixing.

i'm still stumped on how to fix it. i tried to rush to update my norton but obviously i wasnt connected long. i tried to run the fix again, but it doesn't fix any more.

I Had the same problem at my dutch XP Home edition. In some newsgroup I found this great solution for the problem:

Uninstall you virus killer. I removed my McAfee 7.0 and after the reboot I received the right IP address form my DHCP server and the internetconnection was normal again.

Don't ask me why, but it's an easy solution

then if nothing works by your self another nick card or get one from a working computer for testing

maybe i need updates...but i cant easily download updates due to no internet.

i ran spysweeper and adaware. i got a lot of stuff. ran the sockfix in safe mode and still nothing.


i highly doubt an out of the box card would behave exactly like my old card that i questioned its functionability, that had worked for 4 days on the schools network. this place is teeming with viruses and the like.

god doesnt want my computer to work. thats the problem.

my card is fine. pinging 127.0.0.1 sent and recieved 4 bytes. 0% lost.
