can not connect to any domain/workgroup

Hello everybody,

I have a very weird problem with a laptop Toshiba Sat Pro 6100 with an Intel Pro/100 VE network card.
I recently repartitioned my HDD and installed a Windows (XP Pro) and a Linux (Slackware 10) on different partitions.
The problem is that I can not connect to any Workgroup or Domain, neither in Windows nor in Linux. I have absoluttely no idea what could this be; I just suspect it's something about the network card's BIOS, but I don't seem to find any tools for testing this.
Prior to reinstalling my OSs I had absolutely no problem; actually, connecting to two different domains worked even after setting up the fresh Windows, but after a booting back and forth it just stopped.

I tried changing the computer's name, going from workgroup to domain but it can't find the domain controller.

Can anybody help?

Is your DNS set to use the domain controller?

What is the actual message you receive when trying to join a domain?

yes, the DNS is set to use the domain controller, I have the very same settings (static IP and all the rest) as usual.

The message I receive is:

"A domain controller for the domain roda.local could not be contacted"
(roda.local is my domain)

In the Details, the error is "No DNS servers configured for the local system"

In the command prompt, with nslookup I get:
"Default servers are not available.
Default Server: UnKnown.
Address: 127.0.0.1"

Does this mean something for you?

Sounds like your DNS server isn't working properly. Do you have other pc's already joined to the domain and able to browse web pages? If you do an nslookup on another pc does it give the correct DNS server in response?

Do you have DHCP set up on the server? If so set the network card to pull an address from there and see what you get.

Edit: Also please post your network settings; ie. IP addresses / subnet for both the laptop & server and DNS settings being used.

I right clicked the Local Area Connection and chose Repair. After a while, it complained with an error that it could not refresh the IP address. When I checked my IP settings, they were all gone. Resettting all these information (IP, Gateway and DNS) allowed me to join the domain, as usual. Very strange.
