Is there a problem with networking & Windows98. I upgraded a machine with Win95 to Win98 and the network stopped working. No settings were altered and all appeared to be working in Device manager. I tried different PCI cards and none would work. Eventually I dug up an old ISA network card - approx 5 years old with jumpers on it, set it up manually and it worked. Why?

I had trouble with pci nics in win98 too, until one time by chance I enabled USB in the cmos (even tho I don't use it) I think it worked cuz it used an irq thereby bumping up the others...win98 kept wanting to put the nics on like irq12 which they didnt like at all, even tho they are supposedly PNP...they seem to like 10 and under...you can try it..it's worked for me every time now.

I have not had a problem with Networking under win98 even linking systems up running different OS's.

You might find that the protocol setting s need a little tweaking to gain 100% performance, although we all know that nothing ever is 100% in computers anyway http://www.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/forum/smile.gif

Three things to try. I had this problem also and it was a hadware IRQ conflict problem.
1-In the bios make sure you have AGP Init first.(For Bios that have this feature.)My AGP card like to pick IRQ 10.
2-Assign you pci slots the IRQ. Do not use auto. (For Bios that let you assign IRQ or pci slots.)I used IRQ 3 and disabled com 1 and Com 2 on the motherboard. I made sure I didn't use 10 because the video card like it.
3-remove card from device manager and reinstall.

Hope this helps.
