I am using WIN95 on a DELL Dimension XPS D300 from 1997. I need to reload the OS and I am preparing to do that. I have replaced the original toshiba CD-ROM drive with a Yamaha CRW2200E. My log from that installation shows that I didn't need to supply any drivers and I don't appear to have any drivers on a CD-ROM. Windows seemed to have all it needed already, although it required 2.5 boots to get through the acceptance of the new drive.
On the Boot-Disk, I have REM'ed out the lines in CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT that refer to the Toshiba drive, and I have booted now with it and successfully accessed the Yamaha CD-ROM drive. But I have looked at the .INF files on the WIN95 CD-ROM and I see that there they want to load the toshiba driver onto the hard drive. Using that driver will hang the system. On the other hand, I don't have any other driver to tell it about, and it's all on a CD-ROM anyway.
So, if I try a reload of WIN95, am I going to run into trouble? Any suggestions on how I might go forward using this Yamaha CD-ROM drive? Thanks in advance.

HI scrableur, Welcome to WinDrivers!
Basically, your Yamaha CDROM should not need any special drivers. Windows will supply them automatically. They will load the default drivers. Even tho it might say Toshiba, they should work fine for you.
It sounds like to me that what you want to do is to boot from your Windows 95 Startup Floppy Disk. Select Boot with CDROM Option. Just let it run. Again, it will load up the Default drivers...don't be alarmed if it doesn't say Yamaha. You can try this without effecting your current installation just to give you confidence.
FYI, some FAQ's for your CRW2200EZ (Windows OS) IDE/Internal 20x10x40 (http://www.yamahamultimedia.com/yec/helpcenter/customer/help_win/2200EZ_Whelp.html) Lots of good info there.
Also, you can find Quick Start Guides & Owner's Manuals here. (http://www.yamahamultimedia.com/yec/helpcenter/customer/manuals.html)
Good Luck!

Thanks very much for the quick reply. I guess I will try it, if it won't hurt.
However, the reason I'm worried is that when I tried the unmodified boot floppy, the system would hang when it got to the line:
DEVICE=TAISATAP.SYS /D:OEMCD001
in the boot disk CONFIG.SYS file. Consulting my log from when I installed the Yamaha, and looking at my current CONFIG.SYS file on C:, I found that I had REM'ed out that line. So I REM'ed it out on the Boot disk also (and the corresponding line in AUTOEXEC.BAT), and then the boot disk worked fine, and I was able to access the WIN95 CD.
But I see that the above driver is mentioned in an .INF file on the WIN95 CD-ROM, and so I got worried, since I can't change that. Doesn't it seem like this driver would also hang the system then?
I wonder if this information would change your advice.
Thanks again.

Have you taken a look at those Guides/Manuals referenced above? I'm on a slow dialup or I'd take a look myself.
If you finally got the Yamaha drive to work fine in Windows 95 with no errors in Device Manager, then go out and create a new Startup Disk on floppy. Then, when you boot from that floppy, you should be good to go.

Yes, I'd been to the Yamaha website, but their tech FAQ were not helpful in this instance. They also had a notice that they had closed up shop with respect to CD-ROM drives. I also just went to the site which has the manuals. They do list the quickstart manual, but they don't seem to have provided a way to actually download it. I already had the Acrobat reader, so I didn't need to download that.

The Yamaha CD-ROM drive has been working just fine in Windows for 2.5 years. However, I'm afraid I must apologize for giving you bad information. In fact, I cannot access the Yamaha drive when I boot up with the boot disk. I became confused because I had copied the CD-ROM that was in the drive to a SCSI drive, and that was the default drive accessed by the boot disk. It *looked* like I was looking at the CD-ROM drive, but I wasn't.
So the problem is that I cannot even access the CD-ROM drive in DOS mode. I've searched the web, including DRIVERGUIDE.COM, and there don't seem to exist any DOS drivers for this CD-ROM drive. I looked at the carton it came in, and it says "for windows". The old Toshiba driver hangs the system.
I do have an old SCSI NEC CD-ROM Jukebox which holds 7 CD-ROMs. But it doesn't seem to get recognized in DOS mode, even though it is on the same SCSI cable as the SCSI hard drive that *does* get recognized.
I'm thinking now that it will be impossible to access the Yamaha CD-ROM drive in DOS mode, and my best shot would be to copy the WIN95 CD-ROM to one of my SCSI hard drives, which *do* get recognized, and just let the load proceed from there. Do you see any problem with that?
By the way, I'm on a dialup, too, but I have plenty of time to wait. :)
Thanks again for your help.
