I have volunteered to help hand out toys to children of homeless families. I will be doing this on Tuesday evening next week.
I remember Christmas morning as a kid was always kinda a magical moment. Unwrapping the gift only to discover a Darth Vader action figure. The Atari 2600. Etc. There are some kids who will never have a memory like that so I want to do something,.. anything,.. to try and help out the homeless families who can't afford gifts. I'll be making my way to the toy store this weekend to shop for toys to contribute, then on Tuesday, I'm heading over to the place to help distrubute them along with all the other donations.
However,.. I'm a little nervous. Not sure what to expect. I hope it goes well.

It will go well with the right attitude. People in situations like that don't want condescension or pity and it can be very easy to appear that way to a family down on their luck.
Just give the presents as usual and expect every reaction from "Wow" to "I don't need charity". Not everyone can appreciate a helping hand for what it is.

So you're buying Atari 2600s for the homeless? What if they don't have TVs?

LOL,.. I can't afford game consoles for everyone. I'll probably get a bunch of action figures or something.

Mainly I just don't want to leave there all bummed out. I guess I'll just have to do it and hope for the best.

As one who has been on both the receiving and the giving sides, just be yourself Wrrby and go in with an attitude of celebration and sharing.
And don't forget to share some of these at about 15$ a pop: http://www.jakkstvgames.com/namco.html

I know how ya feel webbie. Don't worry, you''re feelings will dissolve away into happiness and joy when you see the happiness and joy you bring others. You'll have a lot of fun  You may leave feeling a little sad but you'll also feel a lot of warmth

Then there are these kind of kids:
Father Christmas give us some money
Don't mess around with your silly toys
We'll beat you up if you don't hand it over
Save all the toys
For the little rich boys"
Hope you have a really good time.

It's definitely going to be a different experience. I've never done anything like this before. I've donated and whatnot,.. but this is different. Can't wait to do it.

Anyone can anonymously donate.
Allowing your life to intersect theirs is what makes it all worthwhile, what puts a face on the act. This differs only in that you will be directly involved with the people you wish to help - which is how it should be.
It will come at the cost of living through an emotional event, but I hear emotions aren't that bad. ;)

Right right. That's pretty much it in a nutshell. That's what I'm nervous about. The face to face thing. But I have this feeling that once I'm there everything will work out ok.

Wrbby for a commie-lib  you truly practice what you preach. I have done the toys for tots thing myself several times and there are few things in life more rewarding. You will have so much fun watching those kids you will completely forget your nerves within the first 5 minutes.

A very nice gesture WebHead, hope it goes well.
Gifts like your kindness from the heart (and wallet ;) ) are always appreciated(well not always, but most of the time)
