Windows Me Network Adapter

After upgrading to ME from 98SE my Realtek 8029AS network card appeared OK in the device manager listing. However while trying to set up internet sharing I deleted the entry and tried to reinstall the card. Add new hardware wizard does not recognise the card but allows me to use the have disk option to install the drivers. BUT the hardware does not appear in device manager. I have tried the Microsoft knowledge base suggestion of removing all the networking options in windows setup, rebooting and then reinstalling the options. This recognises my modem OK but not the NIC. Any ideas how I can get Windows Me to recognise the card (it worked fine with 98SE)....thanks

my first thought would be to remove anything in device manager realting to the card or unknows devices.... shut down and then physically remove the card and sucsessfully reboot the system without it... then shut down and reinstall the card.. see what happens then... you might want to pop it into another slot while you are in there just for fun

I say follow CMT's instructions. My question is why Me? It sucks. It is possibly the worst OS M$ has released to date. I would like to have 1% of the revenue that has been thrown at making hardware work under this pitiful incarnation of 9x.

My best advice is to go back to 98se.

I would do what cable modem tech says for sure. You may want to also go into the registry to HKLM/enumerators and delete the whole thing. BEWARE THIS WILL MAKE HAVE TO INSTALL ALL DRIVERS FOR THE DEVICES AGAIN. But have fixed many a scenario with this. If possible don't upgrade use full version and results will be much more stable. ME does a nice job. You really don't have to monkey around with it.

Go to network properties by r-clicking on "My Network Places" and clicking on properties. Then remove all the protocols that are shown. Click ok and reboot. Then ME should refind everything. Make sure to go back to Network properties and install file/print sharing, tcp/ip, etc.

Thanks guys....tried all the suggestions but nothing worked. Eventually re0installed ME and it found the NIC no problem. All works fine now. I agree that the upgrade to ME was not worth it but I was too late to stop the guys doing it. However it is now stabel and network between Macs and PC (using DAVE software) and internet sharing all OK

Win Me must dislike your card. You can try a fresh install of Me, and if it detects it as whatever, and it works, live with. If that doesn't work go back to Windows 98 SE. Which is, the best OS Microsoft have made to date.

If that doesn't work, and a new PCI ( or ISA ) slot doesn't work.. I'd start thinking the card is dead. Try a diffrent one of the same make, and see if that works. I'd stop using Windows Me anyway, however..
