0.0.0.0 is blocking connections?!

for a few days now i have been having trouble accessing sites. this is weird, because i can access certain sites but as i am surfing one site will stop working, but others will carry on. i tried powering down my modem for 60 secs and then doing it again, sometimes that works.
anyway, i have a broadband modem/router, at its default lan address.
so i try a trace route program to see if there is a server down. it is being a little slow, but... most hops get 100% loss at IP address 0.0.0.0! my computer! i have windows firewall turned off, in fact i have no firewall (lol not sure i should be posting this)
sometimes, although there is apparently 100% loss, somehow the trace route carries on. but on certain sites it just refuses to budge.

Hmm, if you've been running XP with no firewall, I'd think your system has almost certainly been compromised...

Some nasties will fiddle with your HOSTS file, check & see if your commonly accessed sites have been redirected there to 0.0.0.0

What security provisions do you have set up apart from being non-firewalled?

First suggestion is always comprehensive virus, trojan & malware scans, & have all security patches up-to-date.

Your host file can be found here:

x:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

(Where "x:\" = the drive windows is installed on.)

If you have an OEM version of Windows XP, you'll find it here:

x:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

You can open\edit the file using notepad.exe or other text editing program.
