I recently bought halo for pc, I had a sis 305 video card and had to change it because it didn't have t&l capability. I found a geforce 2 mx 200 card which microsoft claims supports the game (I didn't have the installlation cd anymore so I went online to try and find the driver for the card) I went to nvidia's site and followed the download procedures for winxp/2000. When I installed it however it totally locked my system up and the screen went blank and then the computer shut off. When I rebooted I had to go through file verification and then I got a screen that asked if I want to go to safe mode or use the last known good configuration (this driver won't load) at least for me. Sometimes I would get a screen that was all fragmented with black lines and unreadable words. I'm stuck using generic drivers and not being able to play halo at all. I could really use some help. !petros

For one thing if you want to play Hali decently, see the minimum requirements:

They say these are the mnimum requirements, dont follow them, get a minimum of something better than this, cause this is with all the graphic options at low and the game looks crappy, get your hand on atleast a GF MX 400 series card, or if u can a Ti4200 then try and play the game.
The card is possibly bad and thats why is giving you probs, also you should remove all the old drivers before installing new ones.
To remove the old drivers use this app:

Then Finally install the new drivers from here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_66.93

I flashed the bios before I put the geforce 2 card in but ok I'll try drivercleaner (I suspected the card might be on it's last leg) I'm just being cheap and trying not to have to buy a new card :) Also winxp_2k_66.93 was the driver that locked the system up. So I'm off to bestbuy to spend more money (I think I will take your advice and get a ti 4200) thanks for your help and the cool links (how's the weather in bahrain) I'll bet it's alot warmer than here cause it's 18 degrees here in St. Louis. 1petros

If youre gonna be playing lotsa new games, get yourself a decent new FX card, something mid-range if u dont wanna spend too much. Maybe something in the FX6600 range, or else get a ATI 9800 Pro, decent prices going for those now. All depends how much you willing to spend, what about the rest of ur system?

I installed a geforce 4 mx 4000 today and I couldn't get the drivers to work on the card till after I went to safe mode, is this common, also I finally got halo to run but it is choppy and my video settings only allow me to go to 32 bit but the mx 4000 is a 64 mb card...do you know how to get it to run at 64 bit techz. 1petros

The rest of my system is as follows AMD Athlon 1.2ghz, ECS motherboard and 256 pc2700 ddr cd burner dvd 80gb hard drive and a geforce 4 mx 4000 video card

Definately, if its cheap get a 512, better 1gb for todays games, and an MX card isnt gonna cut it.

On the subject of this thread:

I'm kind of surprised that nVidia is still updating drivers for the 9x kernel, Iwouldn't have thought people buying GeForce6xxx-series cards would still be running the 9x/ME OS. Support within the driver package for earlier cards (the ones 9x/ME users would most likely be using) wouldn't really change much - how much performance can you add to the older chipsets?

Lets just be happy theyre bothering too, there have been people who are running the latest GF cards in old systems.
