On Christmas Day we got hammered at work. I took these pictures with my old Kodak camera before it ended up DOA on the 26th.
Picture from my office of our Suburban's and Pick up's drifted under. It wasn't until the 27th that they were uncovered and then we were hit with a bigger blizzard on the 29th (alas no camera :( ).

These are pictures of our "PAC" (Personal Accommodation Center). The 1st floor windows are at least 6' off the ground. The PAC is built on pylons to protect the permafrost.

Ummm GrandDad you wouldn't be moving up where I work. That's a 120 miles North of the Arctic Circle and there is no place to live up there except for the work facility (the nearest Inupiaq village is 50 miles to the South).
Down here at home in the Anchorage area it ain't bad at all. Some snow, not nearly as much at work and temperatures in the upper 20°F's.
It all depends on where in Alaska. Now up there in Tekboy and Lost country in the interior it can get ummmmmm...pretty raw. http://forums.windrivers.com/images/smilies/eek3.gif

So what you are saying is that a spoiled Californian like myself wouldn't last a day up there? :D

Oh I don't know about that Wrbby. San Francisco is colder than Anchorage in the summer. http://forums.windrivers.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif
We moved up here from Tucson three years ago and we've adapted very well thank you very much, but like I said the Anchorage area is much more moderate than the interior. http://forums.windrivers.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Why would you drive white vehicles up there? Wouldn't it make more sense to have bright orange vans and trucks in case you wound up stuck somewhere?

I was kind of wondering the same thing myself.

Major Kong, those are some amazing pictures, but I have a question.
What is your job there?
What do you do?
Thanks,

Hey Major... How much snow was dumped in that blizzard? WE just got the remnats of it i think on Newyears night / sunday morning..... we ended up with 6-10 inches. Closed some roads because of white out conditions. And all this was after Thursdays ice storm so the roads/etc are pretty bad in places around here... I did finally get plowed out last night so we were'nt stuck for days anyway....

The short of it is you can get a better price on fleet vehicles that are white. The vehicles have the bright orange reflective stripes though. We are starting to get vehicles that are dark red with silver reflective stripes.

Gord...It's still snowing up there! So far I would estimate about 3' of snow has fallen up there at work. We were darn lucky to have gotten out Saturday evening. Down here at home it's been raining all day, but they're calling for about 1' of snow tonight and tomorrow.

Yeah, that's a fine theory until you get your truck shagged by a randy polar bear :p

Polar bears live out on the ice and we don't drive out on the ice floe. Well not on purpose anyway. ;)
