Hi,
I just bought a mass storage device that is a IBM / HITACHI 250GB 8MB 7200RPM Hard Drive that is enclosed by the following device called PM-350U2-ECB USB2.0 Aluminum External Enclosure Kit. Every time I try to plug it in it finds the device and then says the device has not been installed properly and may not work.
When I go to the device manager and click on this device it has an error saying Code 10. the device cannot start. I am trying to get this working on my Compaq laptop Presario which is brand new and is running Windows XP. Can anyone please help me get this device working.
Thanks
Bob

Welcome to windrivers Bob. Do you have an external power source for the drive? It probably draws too much power to run off the usb port.

I do have an external power source for this device that came with it. What do you suggest I do to correct this problem?
Thanks for the reply

Plug the driver into its power adapter too, it should solve the problem.

This is what it actually is, an Arrow Micro
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-146-171&depa=1
It comes with software. Even on Windows XP some external drives may need you to install the drivers. Did you do this? Did you also turn on the power switch on the rear of the enclosure and listen to see if the drive is powered up?

It came with a disc which I don't have to install because I am running Windows XP. The device does power up. The laptop finds the device and then it says there was a problem while installing. The device may not work properly. Any other sugestions. This is driving me crazy!!!

How is the hard drive jumpered? Master or Cable Select? Have you tried changing it? Dows the drive show in Computer Management-Disk management local? If so is the disk set as active?

I don't know how the hard drive is jumped because I didn't install it. It was pre installed. It shows in the device manager but it has a yellow flag next to it and says code 10. device cannot start. Is there any drivers for these enclosures?

I can't find any Arrow Micro site for drivers. Did you try removing it from Device manager and restarting the computer than re-attaching it?

Try this.
Boot to safe mode and remove the drive from Device Manager.(check all of device manager maybe under Disk Drives your hard drive is listed). Reboot and try installing again.
If it still doesn't work disconnect all usb devices and remove all usb devices in Device manager and reboot and let Windows re install them. Then try hooking the drive up again.
(btw do you have an option in the bios to enable/disable the usb ports?)

I have been trying to remember and I think you just have to set the disk as active in Local Storage. Did you do this?

Make sure you have the right USB chipset driver for your PC. I used to have the SAME EXACT problem when trying to use my pocket drive or my usb flash drive on my laptop. Now mind you simple things like my USB mouse would work. When I looked farther into it I noticed that I had some generic USB 2.0 driver at the top of my "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" heading in Device Manager. Once I found the right chipset drivers all of my USB drive devices started to work. Hope that helps.......

Is this XP Home or XP Pro? Is the user you're logged in as Administrator equivilent? Have you tried installing the device logged in as Administrator? Are you attached to a network? Are you on SP2? 250GB? Is that size drive even supported? Have you tried another USB port? Have you tried this drive on another PC? Are there any other errors in Device Manager?
I would suggest that you contact who you bought it from and ask them. Perhaps you're not the only person who's having this problem. Just because you bought this on EBay doesn't mean you aren't entitled to support. Most good Ebayers will help you when asked!
Hope this helps!!!

I had the same issue with a "mass storage device" with my laptop, but it was a CF card with a pcmcia adapter. I found, can't remeber where, a message that suggested finding atapi.sys in c:\windows\system32\drivers and renaming it to atapi.sys.bak.
Once I did that on the laptop and rebooted it worked fine.
