msconfig and more

well ive recently been infected by a trojan and a worm (i know i need to beef up security) for the most part have removed them with the help of other fourms but i thought id pose my new questions at some windows "experts" for starters one day i decided i didnt need 42 processes runing so i read up on things and tried to run msconfig and i seen nothing, it shows up in my taskmgr, as using 99-100% of cpu, but nothing on screen...also in an effort to clean up my clutterd HD i went searching for extremly large files and found 2 (in my opinion) very questionable windows files system.ini and win.ini both of which are 3.99 gigs, now of course i could be wrong but isnt that a bit much for a .ini, any hiya and thanks to anyone who can lend a hand, need any more info to assist ya with fixing this and ill see what i can do

edit: fyi i since got a third party program to streamline my startup and down to 33 processes

btw, be careful when messing with services/processes, sometimes they can be very crucial, on my current laptop, I have on average when I boot about 40 processes running, and all valid, including AV, Firewall, WiFi. You cant just decide, you dont want 42 processes running, its better to research around first and make sure you arent removing anything imp.

boot in safe mode, clear the IE cache, delete all files under \documents and settings\<profilename>\local settings\temp\
that's where many pests hide. then run msconfig. then reboot...
oh, also disable and re-enable system restore...

obviously ya missed the part where msconfig doesnt work...at all.
and yeah i know not to just go and end/remove processes, hence the part where i said i did alot of reading ("so i read up on it") so ill just wait for some real answers, and to clarify, im mainly looking to see why msconfig wont run or rather runs but bogs down my 2000mhz cpu in a sec. and shows nothing on the screen

Hmmm never seen msconfig use cpu like that.

Perhaps you should extract msconfig from your xp cd and replace it.

Your new copy needs to go into C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries
do a search first on all the drives to remove any old copies and duplicate copies.

Put in your xp cd, click start, run, type in cmd and click ok

now type

expand -r X:\I386\msconfig.ex_ Z:\windows\pchealth\helpctr\binaries

hit the enter key. Note X is your cdrom drive letter and Z is your windows drive letter.
