My computer had something wrong with it and so my dad formatted it and restored it back to normal, however, the display will only let me use 16 colours, i've tried searching for better drivers but it says the best one is already in use, i've tried searching the windows disk and the computer installation disk but it always comes up with the same thing - the best driver possible is already in use. As a result i can't do much because i can't see anything on my computer as it's all chunky and pixelled. Any ideas? Thanks.
Nik.

Thanks mate,
I downloaded the link and when i go to open it opens for about 10 seconds then says everest has caused an error and will now close. Nevermind!
My PC is made by Unika, i've never heard of them, it was the first one i saw and i was young and stupid when i bought it! It is a bit old aswell but can't afford to replace it!
My vga card is called standard PCI graphics adapter. It worked before so it bloody well should now!!! Been doing my nut in for months!
Thanks for your help mate.

Its called standard PCI graphics adapter because windows cannot recognise teh exact model and you need to install teh drivers for that.
You need to tell us the brand/model of that vga card, maybe you can look at it physically and tell us.

The VGA card is the one your monitor is connected too.

The VGA card is the one your monitor is connected too.
You need to open the case and look at the "card" that the monitor cable attaches to....blow off the dust (carefully) and list the names and numbers on the chips or flat square and rectangle looking things on the sides of the board or card. Bit of caution...don't touch anything inside your PC with out at least holding onto the case to prevent static shock from destroying your computer.
Hey wait here....is the video adapter info spelled out on your screen the instant you power up your PC? Most of them flash for a quick second at the top of your screen left side often before the moniter warms up so a restart might display it

Besides the graphics cards info being shown as soon as you boot up, the only other option is to open the case and take a look at the card that is connected to you'r monitor.
Before you install any drivers, you have to know which Make/Model it is so you know which drivers you need. Hopefully, the card is clearly marked and easy to read. Good luck M8 ;)

As a picture paints a thousand words & all, this'll probably be handy (http://www.buildeasypc.com/hw/howto/instgraphics.htm) - (how to install a video card ) - pictures there to show you what's what ;) - & Since you are 'not too brilliant ith computers' - I'd better caution you about electrical safety & ESD which can harm you & your computer ;) - (so unplug it & ground yourself & ensure you and the computer are at Zero Potential by continuously touching the un-painted metal chassis (computer frame) or the Power supply housing to stop static zapping anying - & if you aren't sure, then don't ! )

When i boot up my computer it says SiS 6326, i can't write the rest down cos my arm's in plaster but if you need more info i'll look again, i don't really want to open it up because i'm not too sure what i'm doing and don't want to kill the computer or myself!!
Cheers again.

You don't say what version of windows you are running, but sis drivers are here: http://download.sis.com/download_step1.php?act=Search&mode=2&category=2&subcategory=87&os=8353&x=7&y=6 for 98/Me and here: http://download.sis.com/download_step1.php?act=Search&mode=2&category=2&subcategory=87&os=3&x=19&y=7 for W2K.

Cheers mate,
I downloaded the driver and have it in my winzip file, what do i do with it now? I think i unzipped the file so what's the next move?
I have the option to extract/encrypt/view/checkout or wizard at the top
And when i right click it i can open with/extract/view/view with internal viewer/view with notepad exe./select all/invert selection/file properties.
I've tried searching for drivers but the same old thing - the one in use is the best one. When i tried to install the file as my driver it said it's not a colour file.
Cheers again, you're a legend!!

The setup or install file should be inside the folder you just made by unzipping the download ?
Did you manage that ? make a folder on your desktop, so you can find it, open up whatever you are unzipping by double clicking, choose 'select all' & then 'extract to' & point it at the new empty folder you just made - then if you look in your new folder you should see it contains the fully uncompressed files {& sometimes slightly renamed, as often the first character is apparently missing in files in zips} you could see 'within' the zip folder

Ok mate, i have created a folder on my desktop and extracted the vga to there, but i can't make it a colour file. It still won't let me change from 16 colours, and it still says the best driver is already in use.

Ok dude, you are a little confus-ed ! ;)
A 'Colour file' as you call it, ICM (Image Colour Matching) files to geeks, is what your monitor uses in conjunction with a video driver (what you just got) to correct the image you see in terms of colours & brightness etc to what a 'standard one' is meant to produce - simply put Sony's, say, version of blue is a bit different to IBM's version of blue etc & these files make them 'the same' ..
The fact that you still only have a choice of 16 colours isn't to do with this ICM file one iddy biddy bit ;) - that's to do with your video driver & so I think you are still using the wrong driver !
What shows up in device manager ?(right click my computer, properties, 'hardware' tab & then there's a button) we want to know what item it shows there for 'display adapters' - I think you are gonna find two entries, one for 'standard vga' (what you are apparently using) & one for the actual card - if so try starting in safe mode & remove both entries & windows stands a good job of finding it 'right' but it may still decide to find 'standard vga' (depends how the thing is signalling to windows) in which case you want to try & update that by using device manager & pointing it at what you downloaded, as the '.inf' & '.cat' files needed look to be in the downloads hudonsmith pointed you to earlier ..
Read & try all of that & let us know how you get on :) !

My lack of computer knowledge is driving you fellers round in circles!!!
In device manager and display adapters there is only 1 not 2, it just says standard PCI graphics adapter (VGA)
I downloaded the first driver from the earlier post, unzipped it, created a folder and extracted it to there, what do i do just to get my colours back!!! That's all i want is the colour!!! It's so annoying it's funny!!!

Look in the folder where you extracted the files. There should be a file named setup.exe. Run it.

Is there a setup.exe file in the folder where you unzipped? Run that.
If there is no executable, go back to upgrading your driver. This time, tell windows where to look for the file. Write down the location of where you unzipped the files if you have to. In any event, get windows to see the files that you unzipped.
good luck

There is only 1 file in the folder with VGA under it, no setup or anything else.
I have now deleted everything from winzip, deleted the folder and everything!
I'm starting from scratch again now.
Right, here goes!

Right lads,
Created a new folder and extracted all the files to there and i now have 25 files in the folder, however, there is no setup.exe.
There are the following files in this folder - what shall i do with them?
Now what? Am i even close to getting my colours back?
******* Computer!!!!!
Sorry for being a pain in the arsenal!
A step by step guide would maybe be easier for me to understand cos i don't really get all the jargon!
So far i have -
Downloaded the driver
Select all files
extract them to new folder on desktop from winzip.
You lads have been proper diamonds for putting up with me!!
Cheers again.

SETUP (Application)
That one ! (it is actually called setup.exe, I know I just downloaded both zips to have a look - windows hides known file extensions & replaces them with their function - in this case 'application' ;))
Double click on it & something ought to start happening - we are getting there just sloooowly ! ;)
You're the man!!!!!!
Gonna have to get used to looking at this nice clear screen!!!
All the colours!! WOO HOO!!!!!
Thank you very much mate, in a matter of days you've solved what has been driving me mental for months!!!!
If i could i'd buy you the coldest, tastiest beer available!!!
Speaking of which, this calls for celebration!
Here's to you for sorting this out for me, i'm eternally grateful(Until i buy a new computer that is!!)
Cheers mate and everyone who helped, you're true gentlemen!!!
Get in there!!
