lite on dvd rom problem

I am having a similar problem with my lite-on sohd-167T dvd rom drive
I am running powerDVD,
my os is windows xp proffesional.
Here it is,
My system will recognize it on a cold boot,
But.. if i restart windows, my system will only list it as a cdrom drive.
and if i try to access it i will get a "device not ready error" even if there is a disk inserted in it. is there a fix for this?

First of all what service packs have you loaded for XP?

Did you fit this dvd drive yourself?

Do you know what chipset or motherboard you have? Or is the computer branded? (eg hp, compaq, etc) If branded, please give the exact model number.
