Update Nvidia drivers and wont reboot..

Hey all.
I have a Nvidia GeForce2 MX MX/400.
It is boarderline for the Nascar Sim Racing game I am trying to play but anyhow.

The divers in it are the microsoft drivers dated 2001.
This is in Xp Pro.
I went to Nvidia and got the 66.93 update. Installed by way of update driver in display properties.
Now when it boots up, the screen on the 18" Gateway LCD flickers at boot, then the on/off light goes from green to yellow and it just sits there. Have to go back in to safe boot and roll back the driver to the Microsoft.

Any ideas?

The box is
Gateway Pent 4 1.9
256 ram
18" LCD
and the Vid. card mentioned above.

Oh, BTW I do not have SP 2 installed as I use to have an ATI all-in-wonder in it and after installing the sp2 I started burning up LCD's. Donno if that had anything to do with it or not but am afraid to put IT back in as the warrenty is up on the system now.

I would have thought the 66.93 update was a self installing executable file..why did you use the update driver tool? You should have just had to double click the 66.93 icon and had it run it's own update.

Just followed the instrutions on the Nvida site. It unpacked it in a C:\Nevidia\66.93 folder.
Now I did NOT look to see IF a .exe was in there as I just did what it said to do.
I WILL however check.

Interesting..I just downloaded that same driver, uninstalled the previous nvidia drivers, rebooted the computer, and then clicked on the new driver .exe, it unpacked to the same folder you listed, and then started the install routine automatically. There should be a setup.exe file in that folder you listed..but be sure to uninstall the current drivers from add/remove programs and reboot before trying the new install

REALLY. Wow. I will try again but I am SURE nothing started after unpacking.
It MAY have though the 1st time and then I tried again via "Update driver"
I also made sure (And I am) in as Admin. while doing any of that.
I will try again.

Is it in a brown slot? if so, it is agp. Some card/computer combinations don't like the newest reference drivers. Try some of the older ones on the Nvidia XP/2000 archive page located here (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html) I have had good luck with the 56-61 series when the newest dont work. Just make sure to uninstall the drivers from add/remove and reboot before trying new ones.

I didnt know where the achived ones were. The main thing is I have to have something that supports the newest directX 9c I think it was.
But I will try some of those and let you know.
And as always I am VERY grateful for your reply.

Well, I'm not having any luck with that either. The achived one before the newest would shut down during the install. The one before that installed but the same thing at reboot. Time for another card I guess.
Gona try the ATI again. Will post back and thanks for the replies geo.

Maybe you've already resolved this issue, but I have a similar setup with the same problem -- Recently installed Win XP Home on a Gateway Performance 1800 CX with a NVidia GeForce MX/MX 440 video card. The video driver (which was originally an NVidia driver in Win ME) was replaced by a Microsoft driver, dated 2001. Graphics were slow with certain games & programs. But if I tried to upgrade, I'd get a blank screen on reboot, after Windows Starting Up screen.
After numerous upgrade tests, solution was to go to the http://support.gateway.com, type in the machine's s/n, & upgrade the BIOS & NVIDIA driver given there. Actually, note sure if the BIOS update was needed, but the NVIDIA driver that worked was version 15.20 (I know, old but it works) -- file 7511130.exe.
