I have a problem wtih a HP 6MP printer driver changing one or more common Win95/98 printer driver files. One of these files is unidrv.dll. This update by HP causes a problem with another (Genicom) installed driver.

Is there a that will remove a driver and all its associated files in Win 95/98? Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Hi,

Just for grins, you might try HP's site below for the latest drivers:

http://www.hp.com/cposupport/swindexes/lj6mp_swen.html

I would download the files. Delete all references to the subject printer in Start/Setting/Printers...then Add the printer...when loading drivers, tell it that you have the disk, then Browse to the location that you downloaded the drivers to.

If you still believe it hosed up your other Genicom drivers, I would do the same for it...delete and then reinstall. Just make sure that you have the Genicom drivers handy.

You may have already tried this but hopefully, it'll help you out.

Good Luck!

When you delete a printer driver, it should offer to delete all the unneeded files. If unidrv has been corrupted, you can extract it from the original CD. Check HP's website for issues with this printer driver, they are really good about posting info like that.

Thanks for the possible fix.

One problem we have had in the past is that the HP driver will replace an older common file without asking permission. Then when the newer file is there we can't seem to put the old file back.

Thanks again.

use sfc in safemode to overwrite files that may be in use in enhanced mode. start->run->sfc.....enter the file name you want to extract and point it to the win98 cab files.

Thanks for the tip. What exactly is "sfc"? Who wrote it? What is it's purpose in life?

Thanks for your help.

System File Checker ... built into win98 onwards .... it will find deleted or corrupted/altered system files and replace them from the win98 CD or 98 .cab files on hard drive. Click Start- Run and type sfc , click OK to fire it up ..Use the original Win98 version with caution as it can copy files from the cut-down ones used to install windows (precopy.cab) rather than the normal versions . 98 SE fixed that problem.
