Here's my situation right now:

Total systems with WinME and Astra 1220U : 31

Scanner functional 100% under TWAIN : 19

Scanner functional 100% under WIA : 8

Scanner non-functional under either : 4
------------------------------------------
Why does this happen? On all systems I've had to install/uninstall/reinstall the VistaScan drivers at least thrice. On most systems, after uninstalling both scanner and drivers and then rebooting with scanner off, installin software and rebooting with scanner on, everything's fine, on others, WIA refuses to let go of the scanner no matter what I throw at it, an yet on others, WIA decides to kill itself and take down TWAIN with it.

Is there a surefire way to install an Astra (or any WIA supported driver for that matter) under Windows ME using TWAIN? Or will WIA always attempt to take control?

Thank you.

The only similar thing I've found in the MS Knowledge base is this :
SYMPTOMS
After you install the Vistascan Twain driver for Umax Astra4000u, you cannot access the scanner by using the Scanners and Camera Wizard. In addition, you are unable to resolve this issue by uninstalling the Vistascan software and the scanner.

CAUSE
The scanner may be using the Twain driver instead of the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) driver.

As you can see, this is no help at all.
