HELP, i have (stupidly) uninstalled a via ac97 driver and cannot for the life of me determine what excactly i should be downloading to reinstall, and get my sound back! under device manager it says i have not installed any drivers for the multimedia audio controller .I have downloaded everest home and can give any info required but am a little confused i guess as to my sound chip. I have not got a sound card i know for sure so i assume i have onboard sound. but when i access 'everest' it says under pci/pnp audio : sis 7012 audio device. strange because i have had the via driver running on it just before i removed the driver (why? why did i do it?) and now i have no sound at all , not even the token windows greeting or any little speaker icon in the task bar. any help would be greatly appreciated ( i have been trying to solve this for hours now) and i would be happy to add any info you may require. PLEASE HELP.
ps : if it helps i am running
amd athlon xp 1600+
windows xp svc pack 2
768 mb ram
nvidia geforce 440mx 64mb

use the everest to get your motherboard model, then go to the manufacturers site and find your audio driver. Download it and install.

or

http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/sis7012.html
that has the sis audio driver above but I haven't tested that particular driver.

http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2
has the via ac 97

thanks that was quick!, um so the sis audio driver should be installed WITH the ac97 audio driver? and i have looked at the via arena but got stuck as to which model i have,vt831? etc etc. can i find this on everest? also in via arena it says

"If you have a hybrid chipset (VIA South Bridge and AMD North Bridge for example) you should obtain drivers from the motherboard manufacturer and not from this web site."

how can i tell if this applies to me? should i check the physical motherboard itself?(open pc box)
in eversest it says ( in regards to motherboard) :

Motherboard ID 62-0100-001131-00101111-012505-SIS741$M863GV50_Release 01/25/2005
Motherboard Name Unknown

and when i check motherboard/chipset it is just a blank grey screen , no info.

i am downloading the sis audio driver now, and will try when done, but any more assistance will be greatly appreciated !!!!! :)

no the sis driver failed and promptly disapeared, lol. i think i found when and what i did through the system info history:
REMOVED VIA Bus Master IDE Controller Plug and Play Device
REMOVED Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM) Plug and Play Device
REMOVED VIA Tech CPU to PCI Bridge Plug and Play Device
REMOVED VIA Standard PCI to ISA Bridge Plug and Play Device
REMOVED VIA CPU to AGP Controller Plug and Play Device

62-0100-001131-00101111-012505-SIS741$M863GV50

Scary but its a Pcchips motherboard.

Best off getting the driver from their site,
http://www.pcchips.com.tw/PCCWeb/Downloads/ProductsDetail_Download.aspx?detailid=343&DetailName=Driver&DetailDesc=M863G(V5.1A)&MenuID=43&LanID=0
there is your motherboard drivers above. Choose the Audio download and then after the download install it.
