I solved the problem I was having with no sound from my CD and Media Player 6 by using Everest program which gave me the name and model of my sound card and I downloaded a driver for it which is Trident 4D Wave DX. Many thanks to Platypus, ADS Tech and TechZ for their help!

But somehow with all the things I tried I have ended up with a new problem which is my system locks up in certain situations. I can operate my ususal programs: Word, Outlook Exp, Outlook and navigate the Net, etc. However, when I try Start > CP > Multimedia > Audio tab > Playback section [Trident PCI Playback] > Advanced Properties it locks up the system and I have to C-Alt+del out and reboot. However when I go ...Multimedia > Audio tab > Recording section [Trident PCI Record] > Advanced Properties ...no problem.
So something is wrong with the playback part of Multimedia but not the recording part is my guess. Does this give any of you any clues to give me some suggestions of things I could try to correct this???

An earlier suggestion is that my DirectX might not be a new enough version. It's Ver. 6.01 I don't know if that is compatible with Trident 4D Wave DX (and Media Player 6) or not. Does anybody know?

I'm almost home free on this blankety, blank project so I hope somebody can help me out again. Thanks in advance!!

The card appears to be what would generally be called a "DX5" card (it hardware accelerates some DirectX 5 features), so as DirectX tries hard to be backwards compatable I would expect DX6 to be happy. This is an old DX version though, so MP6 should find it OK, but later versions certainly may need a later DirectX.

Your problem is getting a bit complex to diagnose from afar, with so many things installed & un-installed. Can you get dxdiag to run now? If it will run, on the Sound tab try using the slider control to reduce hardware acceleration. This will make Windows progressively use less of the card's advanced features.

If dxdiag still doesn't work, and the other play functions you've mentioned, I would wonder if the missing file you downloaded from another site may be from a different version of the drivers. You can sometimes get an idea if this is so by comparing the dates in the file properties between the two groups of downloaded files. (The actual system files that unzip from the archive, not the dates of the archive files.)

Did you get the complete driver set? I found one site where it was suggested that the complete set is about 40MB in size.

Also I notice this card is a busmastering card, this can cause problems with some functions if it is sharing interrupts with another busmastering device eg video card. Especially, if the system has an AGP video card, don't have the sound card in the PCI slot next to the AGP, they very often share the same interrupt lines. Even if the card is not in this location, you can check for interrupt clashes by trying the card in different slots.
