Easily. right clik on my network places on your desktop. and choose properties (if it's not there you need to rt clik on the desktop anywhere thats not an icon, choose properties then the desktop tab. then clik customize desktop and put a check in the my network places box and clik ok) Once you're in the network connections screen, rt clik on the adapter, choose properties and uncheck the box that says "show icon in notification area when connected". that should do it......

When connected to a wireless network if you double-click the wireless connection, properties button, then untick "Show icon in notification area when connected" then the icon will not appear when you are connected to a wifi network. kababoom is 100% correct on that one.

If you are not connected to a wifi network then the icon will always show with a red cross through it. Is this what you are refering to perhaps?

The only way to remove the icon in this case (that I know of) is to disable the wifi network card.

I haven't tried it yet because I'm not using wireless here at work, but have you tried right clicking on the taskbar -> properties -> Customize button and setting the behavior on the Wireless icon in the Customize Notifications dialog?
