I'm still Asst. Nice to see some of the lurkers introduce themselves. ironwill99 June 23rd, 2005, 09:09 PM Hi everybody! I have been a member for a couple of years but I don't post very often since by the time I find a thread I could help with the problem is usually solved or someone (usually confus-ed) has already said the same thing I would have. I have a few years of experience in data recovery and computer forensics. I have been building computers for about 7 years now and have worked as a PC tech for about five of years. I am an AMD and Nvidia fan but I don't go nuts if someone says something bad about them. I am A+ and MCSE certified. Currently my wife and I are attending the University of Texas at Arlington. I am in electrical engineering and she is in mechanical. I like to solve problems and help other people out. It makes me feel like my brain contains something other than useless facts and trivia. That's about it. Richard1 June 24th, 2005, 11:08 AM Welcome to WinDrivers. I was born and raised in Ottawa ,Ontaio, I moved here to Newfoundland four years ago and I loved the people here so much I never went back to the city. When we pass strangers in our cars, you know you will always get a big hand wave Hello. Mr_Miyagi September 8th, 2005, 01:29 PM well, hello... nice to have a few welcoming responses! you know what its like when you have stuff to do, its very easy to put stuff to the side and say you'll do them tommorrow. what doesn't help is the fact that i got away from computer repairs (yippe! no more stupid dumbass clients)... Moostang September 8th, 2005, 03:44 PM I thought I should introduce myself since I have done a couple posts on here and I am a forum junkie. My name is Sabrina, I am currently a tech for a small software company, I train and support people on our software, but I also got the whole small business network/server dumped on me since I am the only one who has a any understanding of how they work(I work with programmers that can barely retrieve their emails :eek2: ) so I spend a lot of time on the internet teaching myself different things to do with the server, although I had schooling and a work experience, I never had to manage a whole network by myself. But I am managing.. I even have time to teach myself Flash and 3d modeling(my lastest ventures). Non-techie wise.. I am a horse person... ok a horse junkie/addict... infact I am so bad about forums and horses I got made a moderator on a busy horse forum. But I will stop typing now otherwise I will go on for ages. Richard1 September 8th, 2005, 04:41 PM Howdy Sabrina, and welcome to WinDrivers. I also love horseback riding. I probably go 4 times a year or more. Where I live is all flatland. I prefer horseback riding through the mountains but it's still a lot of fun. shamus September 8th, 2005, 05:14 PM So what are you doing now? Mr_Miyagi September 9th, 2005, 04:02 AM i work for a registered charitable organisation called shaw trust (www.shaw-trust.org.uk) as a personal advisor helping people who have a substance misuse history back to work or training. its pretty rewarding and i seem to be reasonably successful, achieving quite a few outcomes (the job is very stats orientated). TechZ September 9th, 2005, 05:30 AM Welcome to the forums Sabrina :) You seem to keep yourself quite busy learning so many new things  NooNoo September 9th, 2005, 05:35 AM Welcome aboard Sabrina. Platypus September 9th, 2005, 07:53 AM I expect that would be challenging, but very rewarding when you meet with success. Mr_Miyagi September 10th, 2005, 07:23 AM imagine getting yourself a job and how difficult that can be; add to it, its for someone else and they may have health issues plus criminal record, plus self-esteem/confidence problems.... its not easy but very rewarding. miles better than fixing computers....! timegoblin October 7th, 2005, 08:27 AM Flutter Flutter Flutter... Timegoblin here, if you wanna know the time, buy yerself a watch! Sorry, its an old one I know. I am the Timegoblin, kinda amateur pc mr fixit. ive got the following pc's running in my household, all built by yours truly. Missus machine (temporary until I build her a shuttle) Asrock mobo, AMD 2000xp socket A cpu, 512mb Kingston DDR ram, Leadtech 128mb 5900xt graphix, 40 gb master drive with windows 2k and software installed, 80 gb slave in removable caddy with music and coursework on, Lite-on DVD/cdrw onboard AC97 sound ina cheap and nasty black case. The younger girls machine Asrock Mobo, AMD 950 Athlon socket A cpu, 512mb Kingston DDR ram, MX440se 64mb graphix, ESS soundcard, 15gb hard drive with windows 2k and lots of girly software installed, very nice but somewhat girly clear sided and topped case with lots of pretty lights from superflower. P1 toy intel mobo, P1 233 MMX cpu, 128mb 72pin ram, TNT riva 16mb pci graphix, 10gb hard drive with all kinds of windows and software on, CDROM, desktop case WITH TURBO BUTTON! k6-2 pc (no idea what im doing with this!) k6-2 550 cpu, 128mb SDRAM, Lite-on CDRW, TNT riva 32mb graphix, unknown brand soundcard, 13gb hard drive with the usual windows and stuff on it, nice silver case (was my first ever pc case *sniff sniff*) I really really need to get rid of some of my old pc stuff, lol, my parts box looks like a landfil site  Anyway, i really enjoy messing around with old pc's and bits. I prefer an older pc to a newer one. there was so much more choice with makes and models of graphix cards and the like, unlike now. and you can buy bthe old stuff for pence and upgrade it to a degree that would have, had you done it when the stuff was new, cost you hundreds and hundreds of pounds. all good fun. maybe I should get out more... Then the tough part of figuring out what to do for my Bachelors... Deciding to go back to school, instead of becoming a layed off tech was a wise decision. NooNoo October 15th, 2005, 04:51 AM I'm doing BSc. Applied Computing here - consists of Oracle Database Management, Java Enterprise, Enterprise Networking and a couple of other things. Make a list of stuff you want to learn at degree level - maybe with an eye on the best paying jobs :D - then go looking for a degree that has most of those components. Deadeye901 October 17th, 2005, 07:32 PM Hey folks. I've been around computers since around 1979/80. I still have my first two computers, a Tandy Model II with the 8 inch floppy. It had 16 K of ram. And a Compaq Deskpro. It has a 10 meg hard drive. oooooo. I havn't been keeping up with computer technology too much in the last couple of years. Well anyway, I've run into a problem, I won't get into that here, so i'll throw it at you in the proper place. I've been lurking around for a while and it looks like it's a lot easier to get drivers and such, than it used to be. Am I in the wrong place? The folks who do most of the answering, tend to hang about in the 'technical bits', lurking for folks 'in distress' & generally settle for 'welcome to windrivers' on any first post, & its only when we get really really bored :eek2:  , that places like this get looked at ;) But welcome aboard m'hearty, its nice to see someone 'old' here, as well as me ! :thumbs2: Mags October 19th, 2005, 09:20 AM Thanks TimeGoblin and Confus-Ed ... Partly the reason I'm getting a laptop soon, if that wire gets cut, I'm up a creek without an extension lead ! But also the laptop will keep me 'connected' while this PC gets reformatted. Ole ! slgrieb October 19th, 2005, 07:40 PM And the point is...? KINGofBLEH October 20th, 2005, 12:05 AM Welcome, Mags. It's good to have another friend from the other side of the pond join WD. Thanks all for your welcome anyways, and TripleRLtd, I don't know what a wotpp is? But there are no women of the PP here! And Triple, why aren't you stepping on the gas and getting the wotsit out of there?! slgrieb October 20th, 2005, 07:31 PM Generally, most posters need help with a problem. Sometimes they forget little details like the nature of the problem and so on. Just kinda thought there was going to be more to your initial post! Kept waiting for that other shoe. Also usually too busy and too stressed to be very chatty. I'm not retired, just tired. So, Hello Mags! TripleRLtd October 20th, 2005, 08:24 PM (Remember sl, this is the forum where peeps intro themselves and don't post there problems. ) So Mags, I'm sure that -ed and Z will be happy to know that "WOTTP" is a WD thing. They will be sure to explain. (I just love keeping you hanging, btw;)) Also, the "REAL" leader of the "WOTPP" movement is semi-retired and in seclusion at the moment...getting another job as well as his life straight. His name is "Adept", and he is missed and wished well by me for one. TechZ October 21st, 2005, 06:23 AM WOTPP simply stands for Way of the Post Pad, basically post junkies ;) NooNoo October 21st, 2005, 01:41 PM Padding Posts, Mags, is an art... it's not just about posting LOL or Cool after every post (although that is a technique used by inexperienced members). The art of post padding is creating a post that is completely useless but at the same time totally fascinating. True artists also leave some points unfinished in order to allow fellow post padders to practise their skills too. May I also say that while Adept's army of post padders, of which I am a card carrying member,:) , do practice an occasional post pad, I really believe Confus-ed to be the leader, General, King of the post pad. His way of semi-answering a question, forcing the questioneer to post again, which ultimately leads to multiple posts by himself, elevates him to King of the post padders. I'm gonna stick with Women of the Prehistoric Planet. I didn't study what they really were, but they had no computers, maybe they sewed and knitted and painted and wrote poetry? Have been at a Craft Evening ... am sure no-one's listening to this .. and women everywhere, the odd man, well I don't mean odd men, I mean odd men, wandering around. Cards, silk painting .. no-one's reading this so I can pad on a bit more .. girls singing, playing instruments, me doing a poetry performance and being applauded .. I'll get no claps for this Prehistoric  Planet Pad. Night. Mayet October 21st, 2005, 06:47 PM Welcome Mags what a name........ anyone that shares a name with someone as umm..infamous? famous.....ok mediocre as me, has just got to be special...... slgrieb October 21st, 2005, 07:19 PM Post away! Most of us will tollerate a high degree of perversity. CRAP!! I meant DIVERSITY. The same kind of Fruedian slip I recently experienced with my wife. I said, " God! You're annoying!" when I meant to say, "Please pass the marmalade, my love". Still explaining this to her attorney. OK, sometimes I'm chatty. slgrieb October 21st, 2005, 07:24 PM Also Mags, while we are on the subject, I think the claps is caused by a recently evolved bacterium, and Prehistoric Women weren't ravaged by the disease. Only by sabertooths, Mastodons, Mammoths, enemy tribes, and their immediate family if they lived in Arkansas or West Virginia. NooNoo October 22nd, 2005, 05:17 AM Well ...er...don't mind me, just chat amongst yourselves about post padding and whatever .. I'm gonna stick with Women of the Prehistoric Planet. I'll get no claps for this Prehistoric  Planet Pad. Night. Now there you go, your first step to a truely creative post pad... in order to improve your technique, may I suggest that the Women of the Prehistoric Planet be explained a little more - enough to tease some interest in the subject from fellow WOTPP members? Potato Salad October 22nd, 2005, 01:43 PM Welcome MAGS. And as they say better late then never :thumbs2: Mags October 22nd, 2005, 01:49 PM Hi Mayet, thanks for the welcome, I clicked on your link and erm... some items were most interesting .. Slgrieb, you obviously know a great about a great deal, except the marmalade! NooNoo, oh, creative padding, goodness me, good job I don't have time, I once rattled off a 2,000 word article before church one Sunday, editor said it was too long! Explain more about the Women of the Prehistoric Planet? Don't have time at the moment, as off to a Rock n Roll Gig at 8.15 and dunno what to wear yet! Been setting up laptop, finally it's almost manageable and back in it's box. Can't do a thing with this PC yet, wait til Ellie's kids are back at school and I've got this week over. Now the point is, were the Women Prehistoric or was it the Planet that was Prehistoric? Mags October 26th, 2005, 05:12 PM Now there you go, your first step to a truely creative post pad... in order to improve your technique, may I suggest that the Women of the Prehistoric Planet be explained a little more - enough to tease some interest in the subject from fellow WOTPP members? I doubt there'll be any interest now, because the rush has died down.. not that there was a rush, does anyone rush in Computer-land? Anyway, the Women of the Prehistoric ... where were we? .... Planet, of course had no computers. So they wrote letters with quill pens made from the birds who were walking around and they gave their letters to friends to go and deliver ... and it had to be a Monday. One never delivered one's own letters, if one did so, then one may as well not have written a letter .. the friends were called ..... slgrieb October 26th, 2005, 05:47 PM Well, since no one else is stepping up to the post... http://www.mst3kinfo.com/daddyo/di_104.html Should give you a good start on understanding Women of, but I have to say this only scratches the surface of this piece of, uh, classic cinema. Mags October 26th, 2005, 06:41 PM Aah, Slgrieb, you are the first to actually mention the 1965 Women of the Prehistoric Planet, but what we are discussing and discovering ... are the Women of THE Prehistoric Planet, who actually differ from the Women of the Prehistoric Planet, in that our women didn't live on that planet, they live on THE Prehistoric Planet .. ...and as it's 11.40pm here ... NooNoo October 27th, 2005, 03:58 AM Perfect Mags, sheer unadulterated WOTPP. You are a fast learner ;) Mags October 27th, 2005, 06:43 AM ...well, coming straight from the new laptop, complete with workman in bathroom doing tiles, front room and PC inaccessible, me running round, 'can I just put newspaper there!' we now move on to more about Women of THE Prehistoric Planet.... Oh by the way, does anyone think we ought to start a new thread in the ...whatever it's called ... (remember the dots) ... Forum? THE Prehistoric Planet differs from the Prehistoric Planet, in that it started in 894 BC whereas the Prehistoric Planet was bought to the public eye around 1965/1966. Therefore, in 894BC, there were no postmen, that's why the women had to deliver each other's letters ... anyone else know any more about the WotPP's of 894? :) Platypus October 27th, 2005, 08:31 AM Hello Mags. :) You have a nice website. http://www.anacondasports.com/wcsstore/anaconda10/images/VB500P_lge.jpg Mags October 28th, 2005, 03:49 AM Thank you, Platypus, so has your friend! CCT May 22nd, 2006, 08:35 PM Okies, heya: I have been posting here for a bit and I like to offer suggestions and I sometimes need help so here is my background. I have: Asus P5GD1 450 watt namebrand psu Intel 3.6 HT cpu BFG 6800 Ultra OC graphics (recently upped from a Winfast PX6600 256/128) Logitech G15 keyboard LG cd/dvd r&w 4x512 Samsung DDR Ram 2x 36 GB WD Raptor 10k in Raid 0 I have had numerous problems with this setup since it shipped from British Columbia to Ontario and had a bad stick of ram installed and the heat sink was loose during shipping etc etc etc. I have learned lots and have read lots and I like to research. So when I have an answer I see that fits a problem, I offer my advice. I am not always right, but I many times am. And advice is one of those things that I know is cheap, and should be take with a grain of salt. I don't try to mislead and I genuinely like to help. Custom avatars are "by arrangement" - if you become a bit of a regular on the forums, you can email a suitable avatar file to a Megamod or one of the Admin team with a request for it to be accepted as your custom avatar. We haven't set a specific benchmark like a minimum post count as it's not a very good indicator of whether someone has become part of the WinDrivers comunity. But if you want to join in, post away and when you've done a bunch of good posts & have become part of the furniture, put in your request. :) knowhow11 August 30th, 2006, 03:13 PM Hello there! I just wanted to let everyone know that my friend and I are starting to do IT help work in the Upstate SC area. We were wondering if anyone knew of any clients that may be in need of this service in the area that we are located. We are going to work on 'the side' keeping our normal 9-5, hoping to expand into a business capable of holding its own. The ultimate plan is to get away from the 9-5 and really do something with our lives. After hours work will be readily available, meaning that we will work nights and weekends if needed. We would be very grateful for any help provided. We will definitely be pricing below marketing average for our area. Any feedback is greatly appreciated and if anyone needs our service we will be happy to work with you. We are ready to take credit cards so feel free to post here or drop us an email @ scitsupport@charter.net. Thanks very much in advance! I have a passion for fixing things and challenges, so I hope that this will go well. stone0075 October 23rd, 2006, 08:10 PM Hi schnautzr PCRookie October 25th, 2006, 01:58 PM I am a PC Rookie as my name emplies. I am not a computer Rookie. I taught school and got in on the ground floor of the computer literacy push in the schools. My early exposure to Apples converted me to only Mac ownership. I love my Mac computers. (I have 5 of them!) I am working now on my G4 purchased in 2002. When I upgrade, it will be a Mac again. They are so EASY! That said, you might wonder what I am doing on this forum. Well, it is like this. I have to use PC's at the library and at some other volunteer "jobs". I know how to use them. I don't know how to troubleshoot, configure them or work on them. I can take the cover off & peek inside for id'ing cards, connections, etc but that is just about it! My son did not have a home computer but a great PC at work. He had a computer system donated to him for his kids to use for their games. His wife purchased some games to use but their PC was a Pentium II. The games required a Pentium III. I have a friend who retired from his TV repair business and started doing volunteer maintenance on the government surplus PC's that the school had donated to them. He also buys surplus computers at business & school auctions. He had a Dell Optiplex GX110 that had been "wiped". We pulled the software off the Gateway 2000 & installed it on the Dell. Then we proceeded to combine the Dell with the Gateway 2000 monitor, speakers, & printer. The monitor works in the 16 color minimum screen resolution & I can't seem to find the right adapter & driver combo to overcome that minimum (which won't run the software that I have). I can play music CD's in the CD Drive but can't hear the sound through the desktop speakers. I can hear sound through the earphones when connected directly to the plug on the drive face. I need help. I already have money invested in this system. What can I do to overcome these problems. This is a good computer w/zip drive too. Do I need a different monitor or would I still encounter the problems I have with the Gateway 2000 Vivitron 1776? The monitor is very good w/beautiful color. Crastabule October 25th, 2006, 02:22 PM You'll get no help from us Mac-boy! -.- Just kidding, you do have to tell us what OS you are using though, or I won't be able to direct you to the exact page you need to go to on Dell.com and get the drivers for the video chipset you are using. The sound thing is a little wierd, if you can do headphones, you should be able to do speakers as well. But no, your monitor will work fine on that system. 3fingersalute October 25th, 2006, 02:23 PM You need a video driver to allow you to take full advantage of the video card. Do you happen to know the make an model of the video card? If not, perhaps try downloading Everest (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html), installing and running it and posting the results here so we can help you locate a driver. As far as your sounds is concerned, you probably need to hook up an audio cable - its a small cable that runs from the back of your CD-ROM drive to the sound card inside the computer. PCRookie October 25th, 2006, 02:36 PM Well, thank you but I am not MacMan...I'm MacMam. I am using Win 98SE & I have already downloaded & run Everest. See my communications at http://forums.windrivers.com/showthread.php?p=633378&posted=1#post633378 NooNoo October 26th, 2006, 07:57 AM double posting is annoying, because you get two different sets of possibly conflicting answers. This thread is locked. edball October 29th, 2006, 12:04 PM Whoa! Brings back fond memories of my first investment, an 8088 with an RGB monitor (16 big colors) and a single dual density, double sided 5.25" drive. I didn't have enough money for the color monitor and a second drive. I cut my teeth on an old Atari 16, which we used to write text games in Basic. Edball remembers! :p I do remember. We were writing the coolest game ever and ran out of memory! 3fingersalute October 30th, 2006, 08:08 AM Welcome aboard Soccermasta. I remember the first computer we purchased for our computer store when we opened in in early 1989. It was a 286, and we could choose between either a 40MB or 67MB RLL harddrive - we went with the 67MB and everybody told us we were nuts, as we would NEVER fill an entire 40MB hard drive, much led alone a 67MB one!!! 3fingersalute October 30th, 2006, 08:09 AM There is a specific laptop forum and a couple of members are HP accredited - perhaps you should post some of the error codes there? Great idea! (Especially considering the laptop forum hasn't had a post in almost a month.....:( ) Country Bumpkin November 27th, 2006, 09:42 AM G'day, I am a true country bumpkin, living on a farm in the NE of Victoria in Australia. :) Computing was my hobby for a period of about 5 years about 12 years ago but I am so far behind the times now I am almost overwhelmed by it all. But by still wanting to understand what I can about my machine and its idiosyncracies I stumbled on WinDrivers a couple of days ago and I really love this site. Everyone is so helpful and it doesn't seem to matter how silly my questions are people are happy it seems, to direct me to an answer if not answering it themselves. I also love how the threads can be about anything for instance like the WOTPP thread. Love it! ;) Well that is a bit about me bye for now  NooNoo November 27th, 2006, 11:50 AM It's always good to have a new member that wants to learn!
