After 30 years of being a plumber I'm still lucky to get my bills paid. And I sure love working with computers. I am married have three daughters and six grandchildren which I help take care of. TB here. I don't get to visit as often as before due to real life events, but I do pop in from time to time to see what's happening. It's nice to still see alot of familiar faces are still around.

Hi everybody!

I have been a member for a couple of years but I don't post very often since by the time I find a thread I could help with the problem is usually solved or someone (usually confus-ed) has already said the same thing I would have.

I have a few years of experience in data recovery and computer forensics. I have been building computers for about 7 years now and have worked as a PC tech for about five of years. I am an AMD and Nvidia fan but I don't go nuts if someone says something bad about them. I am A+ and MCSE certified. Currently my wife and I are attending the University of Texas at Arlington. I am in electrical engineering and she is in mechanical. I like to solve problems and help other people out. It makes me feel like my brain contains something other than useless facts and trivia. That's about it.

I thought I should introduce myself since I have done a couple posts on here and I am a forum junkie.

My name is Sabrina, I am currently a tech for a small software company, I train and support people on our software, but I also got the whole small business network/server dumped on me since I am the only one who has a any understanding of how they work(I work with programmers that can barely retrieve their emails :eek2: ) so I spend a lot of time on the internet teaching myself different things to do with the server, although I had schooling and a work experience, I never had to manage a whole network by myself. But I am managing.. I even have time to teach myself Flash and 3d modeling(my lastest ventures).

Non-techie wise.. I am a horse person... ok a horse junkie/addict... infact I am so bad about forums and horses I got made a moderator on a busy horse forum. But I will stop typing now otherwise I will go on for ages.

its pretty rewarding and i seem to be reasonably successful, achieving quite a few outcomes (the job is very stats orientated).

Anyway, i really enjoy messing around with old pc's and bits. I prefer an older pc to a newer one. there was so much more choice with makes and models of graphix cards and the like, unlike now. and you can buy bthe old stuff for pence and upgrade it to a degree that would have, had you done it when the stuff was new, cost you hundreds and hundreds of pounds.

Hello, I found this forum when I knackered my PC's recognition of my digital camera (by installing Windows Backup from XP) .. never had so much fun since! Have learnt a lot .. but have yet to do a complete reinstall of this PC .. and have ordered a laptop in between.

I used to be an Analyst Programmer in the dark days before Windows, wouldn't know what to do with a pop-up button!

Then the tough part of figuring out what to do for my Bachelors...

Deciding to go back to school, instead of becoming a layed off tech was a wise decision.

I'm doing BSc. Applied Computing here - consists of Oracle Database Management, Java Enterprise, Enterprise Networking and a couple of other things.

Make a list of stuff you want to learn at degree level - maybe with an eye on the best paying jobs :D - then go looking for a degree that has most of those components.

I've been around computers since around 1979/80. I still have my first two computers, a Tandy Model II with the 8 inch floppy. It had 16 K of ram. And a Compaq Deskpro. It has a 10 meg hard drive. oooooo. I havn't been keeping up with computer technology too much in the last couple of years.

Well anyway, I've run into a problem, I won't get into that here, so i'll throw it at you in the proper place.
I've been lurking around for a while and it looks like it's a lot easier to get drivers and such, than it used to be.

Thanks TechZ, my computer's attention span is only as long as the home made telephone extension line stays intact, it runs from the back room, up a wall, over a door, down the wall to the modem !!

Partly the reason I'm getting a laptop soon, if that wire gets cut, I'm up a creek without an extension lead ! But also the laptop will keep me 'connected' while this PC gets reformatted.

I would also concur on your statement Trip. May I also say that while Adept's army of post padders, of which I am a card carrying member,:) , do practice an occasional post pad, I really believe Confus-ed to be the leader, General, King of the post pad. Now there you go, your first step to a truely creative post pad... in order to improve your technique, may I suggest that the Women of the Prehistoric Planet be explained a little more - enough to tease some interest in the subject from fellow WOTPP members?

I doubt there'll be any interest now, because the rush has died down.. not that there was a rush, does anyone rush in Computer-land? Anyway, the Women of the Prehistoric ... where were we? .... Planet, of course had no computers. So they wrote letters with quill pens made from the birds who were walking around and they gave their letters to friends to go and deliver ... and it had to be a Monday.

One never delivered one's own letters, if one did so, then one may as well not have written a letter .. the friends were called .....

THE Prehistoric Planet differs from the Prehistoric Planet, in that it started in 894 BC whereas the Prehistoric Planet was bought to the public eye around 1965/1966. Therefore, in 894BC, there were no postmen, that's why the women had to deliver each other's letters ... anyone else know any more about the WotPP's of 894? :)

Okies, heya: I have been posting here for a bit and I like to offer suggestions and I sometimes need help so here is my background.

I have:

Asus P5GD1
450 watt namebrand psu
Intel 3.6 HT cpu
BFG 6800 Ultra OC graphics (recently upped from a Winfast PX6600 256/128)
Logitech G15 keyboard
LG cd/dvd r&w
4x512 Samsung DDR Ram
2x 36 GB WD Raptor 10k in Raid 0


I have had numerous problems with this setup since it shipped from British Columbia to Ontario and had a bad stick of ram installed and the heat sink was loose during shipping etc etc etc.

I have learned lots and have read lots and I like to research.

So when I have an answer I see that fits a problem, I offer my advice.

I am not always right, but I many times am.

And advice is one of those things that I know is cheap, and should be take with a grain of salt.

I don't try to mislead and I genuinely like to help.

So there -here I is!

Figured I should post here, probably should have made this my first post, but found the forums here and got excited that maybe I will meet some others in similar situations.

Have been building, repairing, playing, tinkering, etc... with puters since I was 8. Well if you consider the TI-99 a puter. lol Mainly did my tech stuff on my own time while working in the architectural field. Finally saw an opportunity to get into computers as a profession. Been doing support now for 6 years. I do a lot, and I mean a lot of repairs on our corp laptops. I got HP APS certification, and now I make moeny for my company for doing these repairs. Oh I still do the desktopsupport rolle as well.

On the Personal side, I love Soccer and play still to this day. I enjoy cigars, motorcycles, and oh yes playing outside with my 2 kiddos.

Thats a brief enough intro. Hope to meet a lot of you guys and gals.

Found this accidentally while troubleshooting a computer...someone else had the same problem I did...and I was able to tell them how to fix it once I figured it out.

So anyway...I install Windows in the basement for a living (you'd be surprised how much dirt you can see through them, and some worms and crawdads...occassionally a mole).

I am constantly troubleshooting the computers I build here so I will probably frequent this site.

I am a PC Rookie as my name emplies. I am not a computer Rookie. I taught school and got in on the ground floor of the computer literacy push in the schools. My early exposure to Apples converted me to only Mac ownership. I love my Mac computers. (I have 5 of them!) I am working now on my G4 purchased in 2002. When I upgrade, it will be a Mac again. They are so EASY!
That said, you might wonder what I am doing on this forum. Well, it is like this. I have to use PC's at the library and at some other volunteer "jobs". I know how to use them. I don't know how to troubleshoot, configure them or work on them. I can take the cover off & peek inside for id'ing cards, connections, etc but that is just about it! My son did not have a home computer but a great PC at work. He had a computer system donated to him for his kids to use for their games. His wife purchased some games to use but their PC was a Pentium II. The games required a Pentium III. I have a friend who retired from his TV repair business and started doing volunteer maintenance on the government surplus PC's that the school had donated to them. He also buys surplus computers at business & school auctions. He had a Dell Optiplex GX110 that had been "wiped". We pulled the software off the Gateway 2000 & installed it on the Dell. Then we proceeded to combine the Dell with the Gateway 2000 monitor, speakers, & printer. The monitor works in the 16 color minimum screen resolution & I can't seem to find the right adapter & driver combo to overcome that minimum (which won't run the software that I have). I can play music CD's in the CD Drive but can't hear the sound through the desktop speakers. I can hear sound through the earphones when connected directly to the plug on the drive face.

I need help. I already have money invested in this system. What can I do to overcome these problems. This is a good computer w/zip drive too. Do I need a different monitor or would I still encounter the problems I have with the Gateway 2000 Vivitron 1776? The monitor is very good w/beautiful color.

Just kidding, you do have to tell us what OS you are using though, or I won't be able to direct you to the exact page you need to go to on Dell.com and get the drivers for the video chipset you are using.

The sound thing is a little wierd, if you can do headphones, you should be able to do speakers as well.

But no, your monitor will work fine on that system.

You need a video driver to allow you to take full advantage of the video card. Do you happen to know the make an model of the video card? If not, perhaps try downloading Everest (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html), installing and running it and posting the results here so we can help you locate a driver.

As far as your sounds is concerned, you probably need to hook up an audio cable - its a small cable that runs from the back of your CD-ROM drive to the sound card inside the computer.

Welcome aboard Soccermasta. I remember the first computer we purchased for our computer store when we opened in in early 1989. It was a 286, and we could choose between either a 40MB or 67MB RLL harddrive - we went with the 67MB and everybody told us we were nuts, as we would NEVER fill an entire 40MB hard drive, much led alone a 67MB one!!!

Computing was my hobby for a period of about 5 years about 12 years ago but I am so far behind the times now I am almost overwhelmed by it all. But by still wanting to understand what I can about my machine and its idiosyncracies I stumbled on WinDrivers a couple of days ago and I really love this site. :heart:
