DOWNLOAD: MS reduces Windows Updates by 500k each

Good news for dialup users, Microsoft has released a package available via Windows Update that has a generic installer so that each update will no longer require it's own installer package, which bloats each update by 500k (give or take).


The Package Installer for Windows is used to install software updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems and for other Microsoft products. Software update 898461 installs a permanent copy of the Package Installer for Windows version 6.1.22.4 on the computer so that subsequent software updates can have a significantly smaller download size.

I don't think they got all the wording right yet on these kb's ;) .. folks need to be aware that they must have also gotten themselves the new installer redistributable (version 3.1(v2)), either via windows update or from here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=889482fc-5f56-4a38-b838-de776fd4138c&DisplayLang=en) as well, for this to be 'so' ...

The complication stems from how they've changed all this overlapping patches of patches stuff, to a slightly more sensible way of managing change, but it now means half the kb's are 'wrong' in that they don't mention this fact - you may well have already applied service packs which at previous points in time didn't include (but would do if you did them 'now' {as they've been updated}) the necessary support files to make the patch techz quotes work correctly.
