I am doing a repair install on xp home with sp1....the same os that is on the computer. I just installed a new motherboard and everything is fine. The computer boots up to start screen, then stops with an error message that flashes by.
I have disabled GoBack and when running repair install I am informed that "Setup cannot fine a previous version of windows installed on your computer....the same one that I boot up to is unrecognized.
Uses NTFS file system.
I do not want to lose any data with a full install and have not found any way to solve this problem.
Earlier I installed a temporary disk and put xp on it...runs fine and ran it as boot and non-boot. As a boot disk it did not see the other disk.
Seagate diskwizard saw the disk but could not identify it as NTFS.
It shows no sign of a dynamic disk overlay on it...but could be.
Who has an idea...will definitely be grateful...thanks.

you have to uninstall goback..not just disable it. Go back hides everything on the disk. (and btw..is not needed with xp since system restore is pretty much comparable)

Hopefully this is answered now with the uninstall suggestion ? Goback 'wraps' the data, so removing it should let windows setup see it.
I'd agree with that wholeheart-ed-ly :thumbs2: & add that if you are using goback (which imho is the 'devils spawn' :eek2: - see This (http://etestinglabs.com/clients/reports/whitepaper/timetrav.pdf#search='goback%20problem') pdf - which has a very full discussion of all the issues with it) on an NTFS based volume, its even more 'not needed' as NTFS is transactional & can 'roll back' disk entries enhancing the capabalities of system restore (like a database, as that's what NTFS is 'really') to all those claimed by goback - you are just munching disk space for no real good reason. imo - goback is for 9x on FAT & no substitute for decent backups anyway..
It can't have worked too good here anyway as you are doing a repair install ! [..whilstle's a bit & wonders off smirking at his 'anti advert' ]

I agree wholeheartedly, however i would liketo try fixmbr. However on a seagate test the disk was fine but there were inconsistencies in the ntfs file system...which probably is goback, but I cannot be sure....what does everyone think ?

You have to keep me up to speed or I get confus-ed ! So you've now removed go-back ? & windows setup can see matters & now you've had second thoughts & decided to try fixing the MBR ?
Just what's it saying to make you think this ? (that fixing the mbr will help)
Personally I don't think I'd be trying to fix this anymore, I think I'd fish the data out from whatever state the disk is in, fdisk & format & put the whole thing down to experience ! ;)

I was thinking of using fixmbr to return to an old version of mbr...but after reading...it probably will no help. The reasoning was that go-back is hooked to the mbr and this would remove it. I have tried the ctrl-alt-g key on startup to remove it but no luck. There is an easy removal tool for win98 and me. But xp with ntfs sucks. Thanks.
