diff. HP LJ5L Q

i got this laserjet 5L. It was "acquired" becuase it was going to be replaced. however, when feeding, it wants to grab all the paper at once. 2 other guys have the same problem with their 5L's. I was just wondering if anyone has heard of a celaning kit for the rollers like they used to issue to deskjet users. i really can't go and buy a full maint. kit for it as it technically is not mine.

Did you check HP's support site for any info on this problem? This can happen if you put too much paper in the tray. Don't load the paper any higher than the arrows indicate.

it's a rear/back feeder. this happens if you put in two pieces or 20 pieces. it sucks and it's getting really old. HP has the full maint. kit for sale. that's all i could find there

I have several HP 5Ls in our office, and I was having a similar problem. I had to have the feeder rollers replaced. They told me those things don't last very long. Anyway, it cost the office about $60/printer. They work great now though. Good luck.

The following info was taken from HP's Service Manual for LaserJet's 5L and 6L:

"Paper motion begins when the DC Controller energizes solenoid SL1. This causes the paper pick up roller to rotate once. Two actions occur as a result of this rotation. First, the paper kick plate pushes the paper against the pick-up roller. Second, the pick-up roller grabs the top sheet and advances it to the Feed Assembly drive rollers. To ensure that only one sheet is fed, a main separation pad, along with two subpads, hold the remainder of the stack in place."

In summary, I would replace the separation pads along with the pick-up roller. That is standard practice around here.

I would not recommend you try to repair this yourself unless you are comfortable with working on printers. There are 2 parts you'll need to fix it.

Part # Description
1- RG5-1951 Pickup Roller Assembly
2- RY7-5008 Separation Pad Kit

The seperation pad kit will correct it wanting to pull in all the paper at once. The pickup roller assembly may not be necessary now, but propbably will be shortly if the seperation section is worn. So you might as well replace it while your at it and save yourself having to do it in another month or two when it quits wanting to feed any paper.
