Ive just reinstalled XP on a customers machine because of a really bad spyware infestation.
When I first saw it, on boot up it paused for about 40 seconds at a completely black screen after it detects a bootable hdd, and then for a minute at the white progress bar before the first Windows splashscreen. The reinstall will fix that, thought I.
After the format and reinstall, It does the same thing. Except now it launches into Windows nice and fast after the long wait to get past the progress bar.
I took the hdd out, low levelled it and tried again. Same thing. Once its in Windows its fine. The hdd checked out fine on Powermax, and all other hardware checked OK on PC Check. The BIOS all look OK as well. So what have I overlooked?
Its a DFI WT70-EC mobo, 256 RDRAM, Maxtor 60Gb, P4 1.9.

Solved it. Faulty floppy lead. NOD32 gave me the clue when it gave an error message about a drive door not being closed at shut down.

Faulty floppy lead.

We tend to forget about the floppy drive these days of installing straight from the CD. Thanks for getting back with the info.
