NEC nic problem

I have an old NEC Versa 6050 that I'm trying to get onto my network. I have tried 2 working cards with no success. Win98 installs them fine, they are working in device manager. I have tried updated drivers, changing the IRQ, and even reinstalled Win98 with no success.

The cards are a FA410tx and a 3com 589c.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry this post was unanswered until this point, I was called away rather unexpectedly and just returned last evening.

What exact problems are you having with the network cards?

Are you using DHCP or a static IP ?

If DHCP, are you actually receiving an address?
If so, or if on static, can you ping a known good address on the LAN?

Sorry, I'm unable to pull a DHCP address at all. It doesn't matter if I'm plugged in directly to my lan or the modem. Funny thing is my pcicma modem works fine, so I don't think its a cardbus issue, but could be wrong.

Unable to do that either, with either card.

Sounds like some of Windows 98 networking components are not installed. Is it Win98 or Win98 SE? I have seen this before. I would go to add/remove programs and Add windows componants and see if Client for Microsoft Networking is installed and any other networking componants that you may need. I haven't used 98 in such a long time I forget which ones you may need.

You could also try going into the network properties, and removing everything in there, and rebooting. It will refind the nic, then add in the appropriate networking components.

Make sure to have both the 98CD and nic drivers handy before doing this.

Tried both, still no luck. I am at a loss!

Yes, I have a modem card and it works fine.

Which slot have you tried the network cards in? Some are particular about where on the cardbus they are. Have you tried installing without the modem in?

Going back to network settings... what is acting as a dhcp server? Have you entered in the tcp/ip settings the gateway address?
