Please Help

I have been having this problem with my computer. It shuts down when a

program tries to access a cd or dvd in both my optical drives. By

shutting down I mean restarting as if I had pressed the reset button.

By program I mean any program including windows. This is very

frustrating. I have found however that if the disk is in during

startup it will work fine. My system specs are:

Windows XP Pro
Mobo: Asus A7n8x Delux
CPU: AMD Athalon 3200xp+ 400fsb
RAM: 768mb PC 3200
HD: 120gb Maxtor ATA133

Filter Driver Load Order Info:

Upper Device Filter: redbook
Device Object: IDE DVD-ROM 16X
Lower Class Filter: Pfc
Lower Class Filter: MxlW2k
Lower Class Filter: dvd43llh

Upper Device Filter: redbook
Device Obeject: _NEC DVD_RW ND-3520A
Lower Class Filter: Pfc
Lower Class Filter: MxlW2k
Lower Class Filter: dvd43llh
Lower Class Filter: imapi

Burning Software used:

Nero 6
Alcohol 120%
Musicmatch Jukebox 9
1Click DVD Copy 4.2
Copy ToDVD SE
DVD X Copy Xpress

In my own efforts to fix the problem I have updated the Nforce2(mobo)

drivers. Including the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. I also tried to

update the ASPI drivers from 4.6 to 4.71, although I am not sure I did

it correctly. The ASPI.SYS and the WNASPI32.DLL updated but the

WOWPOST.EXE and the WINASPI.DLL did not update.

I hope that I have given you enough info to help me out. Thanks in

advance. :flame:

I'd say its mixed ram "meaning its not the same brand or specifications" or not ASUS approved ram, then again ASUS "Suks" got one here getting the RMA express and never buy an ASUS board again.

Ram is not the issue. I have 3 sticks of 256mb Cosair. Been in the system for a year with out any trouble. As far as Asus goes had the board 2 years repopulated it several times without any trouble. I would recamend the A7n8x to anyone if it weren't getting outdated. Thanks for the reply though.

Have you booted to the XP cd and chosen the 2nd repair? It's an over the top install that replaces windows files and keeps your progs intact....

No I have not done that. I usually do that as a last ditch effort. It may come down to that though. :flame:

I usually do that as a last ditch effort. Not really last ditch, as I explained, you end up just replacing windows files. Pretty harmless.

Then you might try the ribbon, connectors, etc. if the machine is old they might need replaced.

Would be interesting to see if it's the motherboard reacting or whether Windows is BSODing...

Right click my computer, properties, advanced tab, startup and recovery - uncheck the auto restart box. Apply and ok

Now does it show you a blue screen and if so what does it say?

Alcohol 120 !!!! .. try taking it off - had a case last week with 'random reboot', not quite the same symptoms, but nearly, this bit "..have found however that if the disk is in during startup it will work fine.." gives it away to me ;)

btw daemon tools is much better as a virtual drive tool & doesn't do this ! :)

Alright guys. I took Noo Noo's advice and a blue screen came up with the error:

IRQL_not_less_or_equal

I checked my bios and IRQs are set to auto. Can't say I know much about Interupt Requests besides trouble shooting dial up modems in windows 98 about 4 years agoe. Anyone have any ideah's????

What was the rest of the message? Should have been a filename with it, probably ending with sys...

Did you try uninstalling alcohol 120 as Confus-ed suggested?

I also uninstalled Alcohaul 120% as confus-ed stated. Still no change.

I was thinking though. I had installed the latest version of Musicmatch Jukebox (v10), and that really screwed stuff up. The pc was not recognizing the CD or DVD no matter what. I then uninstalled it without success. I had recently used windows backup so I tried to rollback windows and all programs to my recent backup. I had thought it fixed things but maybe not???

Another thought is that I recently installed a swappable hard drive drawer for back up and file sharing purposes. Could that have anything to do with the IRQL problem?

No file extention but at the bottom was a note

Technical Info:
Stop: 0x0000000A (0XF7C000, 0X00000002, 0X00000000, 0X804D9EA4)

Does that help?

Kinda... this error happens when a driver screws up big time and tries to access stuff it's not allowed to... and usually happens when the driver is corrupt. I would start by loading the chipset drivers for your motherboard - specifically the ide drivers (if separate). If that doesn't help, disable the cd/dvd writers/roms in bios or disconnect them. Uninstall all burning software or software with a burning feature and reboot, reapply the ide drivers again. If that fixes the bsod, re enable the cd/dvd devices one at a time, then apply your burning software, again one at a time.

Or, you can forget the troubleshooting and do an inplace installation of windows which will keep the programs you have installed but reset all the files - you will have to do windows updates again and any driver updates you had previously installed.

You could then have time to see if it was musicmatch by installing it again and seeing if it screws up again.... but that's up to you. I suspect that music match and another burning proggie disagreed and caused the problem.

I guess I will try the windows overlay option. I'll get back to you and let you know if it works. Thanks for all your help.

I'd agree with noonoo your problem sounds as if it started after updating drivers, then again the problem could be a hardware problem as mentioned in the previous post.

I've also seen these problems with bad ribbons, power connections, PSU failing, etc.

SUMMARY
One of the more frequent trap codes generated by Windows NT is STOP 0x0000000A. This STOP message can be caused by both hardware and software problems. To determine the specific cause, you must debug the STOP. However, some general information can be learned by examining the parameters of the STOP message and the STOP screen information.

I think so too, & this can show up as an IRQ problem as its all to do with a programming concept called class inheritance.

But I just posted to point out that inplace re-install, won't necessarily fix this ( I think the most likely outcome is that the errant drivers would just stay there, as that's what happened last time I thought a repair install would sort it out 'simply'), but the bit above should; use the filter load order tool to make sure everything is gone :)

In this instance also check device mager doesn't have any 'strange scsi' entries {that's what controls any virtual drives installed usually} or items 'generic cd/dvd' in it, as this'd indicate any unistall routines were incomplete.

Well the overlay option did not work because of the problem. It just hung up when it tried to read from the disk. Any way ended up just wiping and reinstalling. Pain in the @#%& but not a whole lot of options when windows keeps booting to the half installed screen. Thanks for your help

Has anyone thought of a faulty powersupply. I have seen many occasions of this where a PC will reboot when devices such as ROM drives are accessed because the power supply was faulty. Actually I just repaired a client's IBM for symptoms just as these. She'd go to burn a CD or Install a program and the computer would flat out reboot. Using another power supply the machine ran fine. Just a thought
