my sony pcg-f610 550 amd chip, I installed a toshiba sd-c2202 dvd rom. it pays regular dvd ok not like my new hp laptop, but ok non the less, it plays a bit slow not that u would notice. I guess am picky about these things. I was wondering if anyone has ever installed a dvd rom in a laptop that didn't have one that came with it. the pcg-f630 has one so I figured f630, f610, what the heck. I also have power dvd 4 as my player, that's the thing that gives me a an error msg(unk error powerdvd will now close). anything from anyone thanks.

I think Noo has probably fixed you up error wise, with her update suggestion  , so I'll comment on this bit..
My guess about your 'a bit slow' problem, is that neither your cpu or onboard video are quite up to dvd decoding 'really' & that by adding a dvd-rom to a system not originally designed for it you are asking a lot of it, & you can see this reflected in your players performance ... soooo by way of suggestion perhaps go & get yourself something like the Klite mega Codec pack (http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/mirror.htm) which has a 'lightweight player' ? (Windows media player Classic, which uses substantially less cpu & system resources than other 'similar' players) as well as a nice big fat collection of Codecs (COmpressor/DECompressor, which is either hardware or in this case software, which can translate between different types of datastream, i.e. turn dvd files in pictures & sound), which may very well help with overall performance :).
