Just recently I've been having a bit of trouble with my CD/DVD burner and it happened around the same time my CD and DVD drive stopped playing discs automatically when they're inserted into the drive.

When I insert blank media into my CD/DVD rewriter and use Windows to burn, it tells me I have not inserted anything into the drive. However, if I restart the computer, it works or if I deselect and then reselect the "enable recording" tab under the driver properties, it works again (only temporarily for that one or maybe two burning jobs). I've been using the same Memorex blank CDs for over 3 years now since I got my computer and haven't had a problem until now so this is puzzling me.

Also, whenever I insert a CD or DVD, usually a window pops up and asks me what I want to do...however, since this issue started my computer no longer does this anymore...I've gone back to the properties windows to make sure it says "prompt me to take action" or whatever it is called...still doesn't work. I can hear the motor whirring and I can manually open the files, but I'd prefer if the window popped up...

I run Windows XP, my burner is a Pioneer 104, Sony Computer PVX860, and I even updated the driver just today through a patch from the Sony website but it still seems like I have the same problems...

Suggestions anyone? And hopefully it's nothing complicated...a bit computer illiterate on my end...heh...any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Welcome to Windrivers Star FireChild

seems the 104 firmware has a bug (http://www.pioneer-eur.com/eur/content/support/support/update.html)

firmware update here (http://www.pioneer-eur.com/eur/content/support/support/software.html#fdvdwriter)

I know, you said you have been using the same media, but it is possible this bug is showing itself because your media manufacturer has changed the manufacture of the disks.

As to the dissappearing pop up for autoplay ... after you update the firmware follow the steps for xp here (http://www.real-knowledge.com/autoplay.htm)

I had a similar problem. Worked fine on DVDs but wouldn't burn CDs. Bought a new drive - perfect now.
Not much of an answer but I looked for a fix for a week (including updating firmware) and gave up.

I tried the firmware update and it still didn't work...then tried the autoplay bit again, didn't work...but I thought it might be a windows/microsoft issue because it didn't make sense to me why both drives would go flaky on me...found an autofix autoplay program and voila, everything is back to normal again...must have downloaded something and didn't realize it'd conflict with windows...thanks for all your help! =)

Glad to hear it's fixed... what was the magic download that fixed it?

Microsoft autofix download available here (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c680a7b6-e8fa-45c4-a171-1b389cfacdad&displaylang=en&Hash=BJYT4WF#requirements)
told me there was a problem with my CD drive, fixed the autoplay function and then my DVD/CD rewriter miraculously started working again...strange I admit, but an easy fix assuming that it was a program conflicting with another one...it's a shame it took forever to figure out =/

Welcome to Windrivers colinasincolin

you need to download this (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=C680A7B6-E8FA-45C4-A171-1B389CFACDAD&displaylang=en). It will sort out the autoplay problem when you install and run it.
