for scanners I tend to like the HP and Canon, both are quality scaners (from experience) the HPs are a bit cheaper, but the canons are a bit more durable they use prisims instede of mirrors.

hope that does shead some light.

The best scanner ever made (IMOHO) is the HP Scanjet 5300 (Cse or Cxi, doesn't matter). Its been discontinued, but if you searcharound you might find one for about $150 (amazon.com had some last I knew).
Stay away from the 4400 series, they suck. I bought one and kept it less than 24 hours.
The 4200 series was good, though.

6000 series is OK, 6300 is like the 5300 just is network ready.

I'm saving to get the Photosmart s20 scanner form HP. It rocks, but a hefty pricetag of $500 and only does3X5 photos, slides, and negatives.
