A fellow MVP Bruce Sanderson has an excellent site here (http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/) which helps you troubleshoot all sorts of printer problems.
The lexmark printer and printer spool service problem can be found at step 15 in how to clean up printer drivers (http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPrinterDrivers.htm)

Noo:
You seem like an intelligent individual; perhaps you can enlighten me in a paragraph or two. I'm a sr. LAN/WAN engineer w/ extensive client/server admin & support skills, however, I write no code (and don't even pretend to understand it). So, tell me; "is it really that big of a deal for a developer to update a 32-bit driver into a 64-bit driver?" Because some of these product manufqctuirers are getting on my nerves with the delayed release of 64-bit drivers; they almost seem defiant, as if to say "Damn you, Microsoft, coming out with a 64-bit OS.
I've been running XP-64 since July '05 and I'm still waiting on a Lexmark 7170 printer driver, as wekll as a Happauge TV-Recorder card driver, and any decent 64-bit Webcam. I'm starting to draw the conclusion that product manaufacturers believe that the general public will be very slow ot adopt 64-bit technology.
Your thoughts?

Welcome to Windrivers techead...
No idea what the manufacturers are playing at, other than possibly they have the market decided as 32bit is for thin clients, desktops and the like, and 64 bit is for servers and those weirdos that run solaris etc..
I haven't done a survey of linux 64bit drivers... I wonder if they are in the same boat?
Lexmark, however aren't exactly bleeding edge. If you want to have a serious look, then see what 64bit drivers are like for jetdirect/network ready HP printers...?

This is a standard 136 column dot matrix printer... use the equivalent epson driver supplied with windows. If that doesn't work, use the IBM proprinter driver. The driver for that printer is actually included with XP. I don't have a copy of 2000 to check, but it is likely that the Wipro Ex-1050 is also in windows 2000.

There is some stuff here for your printer (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=209&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=74771) but it is not complete.
I can't vouch for these drivers here (http://www.updrivers.com/getdriver/Scanner/HP/Scanjet_3570C-Windows_XP_2000_ME_98_95/19409.html) but you can try them.

ey there NooNoo!
I saw a very knowledgable looking post by you in a forum about problems with installing a printer and I made a profile in order to be able to contact you. My EsponDX3850 scanner/printer won't now work with my vista computer. It has done before but recently I always get an error - printing message and epson scan won't open. I've uninstalled it all etc but probably not thoroughly enough, ie in 'safe mode' etc which I am not familiar with. I think I have lost several precious hours of my life over this already. ANY assistance would be greatly massively thankfully appreciated.

I have also installed the latest scan and drivers and it is closer to printing now than before. It may be relevant it never shows up in device manager even as an unknown device. thankyou very much

Welcome to Windrivers Sheldon
As I said when you emailed me, you need to post what the error message actually is
Did you try downloading a new driver?

Hi thanks for the reply,
I have tried installing the new drivers off the website, which i did initially when I first used vista and it worked. I had to disconnect and move my computer and have recieved various updates from windows in the meantime, and something new has meant I can no longer connect the two.
I have today uninstalled everything and rebooted everytime, then reinstalled the new driver and scan.
When i try to start the scan programme i get
'EPSON scan cannot be started. Please use the Trouble shooting assistant to solve the problem. Do you want to open the troubleshooting assistant?'
when i send something to print the message 'printing -error ' or 'deleting -printing' comes up
THNAK YOU!!

These seem to be messages generated by Vista, rather than Epson errors... correct?
So it would seem that you haven't installed the drivers correctly.
Broadly, you need to install the drivers WITHOUT the printer connected to the usb port, and then when the software asks you to connect the printer, you do so and make sure the printer is powered on a ready (online). The software will then detect the printer. If it doesn't, it won't work, despite the fact that Epson (unhelpfully) adds the printer anyway and finishes the installation.
So uninstall what you have. Remove the printer from the usb port. REstart the machine.
Install the software and connect the printer ONLY when the software requests you do so. Does the software actually find the printer?

I understand what you mean as this is what happened before.
When I installed the driver I did only plug in the printer when prompted and not before. It took some time to configure the port, during which time it stopped and told me to check the connections and reconnect, it then went onto select LPT1: as the port.
I ahve now done this twice, after unistalling, and each time this port was selected but only after this prompt in between saying it was having trouble finding the printer. Without doing it again I cant tell you the exact message so Im hoping you'll know whta i mean. :)

Then it can't find the printer on the usb connection - setting it to lpt1 is the "I give up and I will put it here" option.
So, something is up with your usb ports, the cable, the printer, etc.
So, do you have other usb devices and do they work?
Do you have an picture cds from Jessops or whatever that predate Vista?

Hi thanks so much,
I have other USB devices such as cordless mouse, external portable hard drive, usb pen, all recently used and work fine. I dont have a photo cd i dont think, why? I have the original epson cd if that helps at all.
NooNoo
October 23rd, 2008, 04:05 PM
I found that older photo cds contained software that screwed over the printer drivers. No amount of reinstalling the printer worked until that software was removed and the system files that it replaced where removed and reinstalled with the correct versions.
So have you installed anything since you moved the printer that might have that effect? Remembering that a photo cd is not obviously connected to printing....
I assume you have tried different usb ports when installing? Or do you always plug it in the same ones?
While this article (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;312052) is not strictly for your problem, it will allow you to remove the printer entries in the registry.... but make a back up FIRST!
Then it's a question of using the search to find files that have been left behind by the Epson installer. This takes a bit of guess work, because Vista includes a bunch of vista drivers anyway. You can look at the files for date installed and check they are epson files by looking at the properties.
If the printer is in warranty you can call Epson and they might be able to give you specific help for your model.

hey thanks i will try those things, and thanks for your emai.
I have spoken to epson several times during this process and the operators now tell me it is beyond their knowledge.
I dont have any experience of the other things you've written about thus far but will try to get my head aroung it.
Thanks again.

you might want to try using system restore - it should roll back to when it worked if you have a suitable restore point already set.
Which country are you in?
